Look at it this way. The e39 M5 has a lb/hp of 10.2. The 550i has a lb/hp of 10.6. The 550i actually has a better lb/torque ratio than the e39 M5 (10.6 vrs 10.9). Now if the 0-60 of the e39M5 is 4.8 sec., then based on lb/hp ratio the 550i should have a 0-60 time of 4.97 sec.

Thanks for the replies, but to be honest, that is not what I was looking for. I have done the math too. Numbers can be misleading; for example my e46 M3 convertible smg has very similar acceleration and handling numbers as my 545, but they are very different cars.
I am interested in how the FEEL of the two cars compares. Is there anybody out there who has driven both (for more than a test-drive)?
Thanks.

Thanks. Well said. I guess I got semi-hijacked.
In any event, I did check that post, and the poster had only driven the 550 a few miles, and said he felt no difference. Maybe I'll go drive one and see for myself.
Thanks for the help.

You are very welcome. Thanks for taking my being silly with good humor. I worried later, after going to bed, that you might not have appreciated my silliness.
And, yes, we sort of got off on your mention of performance and, given nothing else to add, went down the performance path. I am sorry the poster had so little info. Now that you mention it I do recall that he did compare the 545i and the 550i and, to date, as I recall, "the power seems the same."

It is a difficult comparison because my 545 test drive was last spring, and the 550i is still in the breakin period. I have been pretty careful with how much I push this car. What I can comment on, though, is that I am getting a great sensation of torque. As I mentioned, per lb this car has more torque than the e39 M5. And it has 100 lb/ft more than my M3 coupe and it weights only 400 lbs more. So I am getting that kick you back into your seat feeling way more than I did in the M3. And at highway speed it really gets up and moves. It is just so damn comfortable to drive around in compared to the M3, and with the SMG the M3 was a challenge to drive smoothly, particulary from a dead start with the lurching issues. What the 5 doesn't have that the 3 did was the absolute feeling of being on rails and complete control.
This is a different experience. I had the M3 for 3 years and wanted a change of venue (and color), and this car so far is not a dissappoitment.

[/quote]Well put. I love my 545i. It calls to me when I go into the garage, and my Z06 gets jealous because it gets driven less than it used to.

So Darkside, do you have the SMG on the new 550?
