I noticed on the 2006 pricing sheet for the 550 that the $1k Gas Guzzler tax applies to the 550i with 6-Speed Manual transmission or SMG. does that mean that it does NOT apply to the AUTO trans? If not... why not?

Thanks.

Automatics are more fuel efficient. SMG gets I believe 2 MPG less than Auto.

I did not know that BMW had released MPG on the new 550i (TBD on the bmwusa.com website). Has anyone heard anything about MPG for the new 550i?

In petrol, yes. Bizarrely diesels take a knock but seem well suited to me!

540i=25.7mpg, 540iA=27.2mpg
550i=25.4mpg, 550iA=26.2mpg

520d=47.9mpg, 520dA=40.9mpg
525d=42.2mpg, 525dA=36.2mpg

Remember that those figures are in IMPERIAL gallons, which are larger than US gallons thus providing more MPG.

My 2005 545i/SMG is getting 19/24 mile per US gallon

I guess the 550i/SMG will be worse? That ain't all bad IMO...especially for a powerful V8....

Bummer about the GGT....

I dont know exactlly how BMW did away with the 545 not having GGT. I did quite a bit of research when I got mine because I didnt want to pay the GGT. if it ment that Auto trans didnt have GGT I would have gotten that instead. I was torn between the two at the time. 6spd was not a choice. (I'm a rare one.)

So Ya back to GGT. with the calculations the 545 SHOULD have GGT! I dont know why it doesnt. you can google for the formula to calculate the GGT, then you'll see. The 545 SMG just missed it by a very tiny bit like .7 or somthing and looked like it should have $1K GGT. The Auto was above the cut off by like .3 or somthing to that extent so does not have GGT but the fact that the auto, smg or 6 spd doesnt have GGT at all gets me wondering. Maybe BMW is paying it themselves?

So now that they're saying the 550 has GGT it makes me wonder if the fuel economy is really lower than the 545. It might not be that much lower in fuel economy than the 545 maybe 1mpg either highway or city or 1 mpg on both and that bumps it just that much lower than the threshold which makes them have to have GGT.

Ok here you go. if you have the mpg for the 545 or the 550 u can calculate it.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/info.shtml#guzzler

the formula is in blue under the chart.

and here is my topic that i posted waaaaay back.

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?show...226&hl=Guzzler

Edit: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket." so what? it was off by enough that the 545 didnt have GGT for SMG? maybe they're off with the 550 also!!!!

That sounds rather odd. Autoboxes weigh more and suck power out of the driveline. By definition, MT cars have to be more fuel efficient if driven properly.
