My Ride: in the market for a 535i
Default 550 to a 535?

Has anyone went from owning a 550 to a 535? If so, why and what are your opinions?

I wouldn't do it. I love my 550, and the headaches involved with the 535 far out weigh the tunability of the car. With issues like High Pressure Fuel Pump, Fuel Injectors, Fuel Rails, Turbos, etc? No matter the warranty I'll stick with the 550, the 535 is quicker with a tune and mods, but the 550 will spend more of it's life on the road instead of in the shop.

I had a dealer tell me there are a lot less problems with the newer 535's, i.e. 2010's, than the 08's.

Fewer maybe, gone? Nope. Remember, take what dealers tell you with a HUGE grain of salt - they are trying to sell you a car, and they will say whatever it takes to do so.

I would only move to a 535 if it was for the new one so i have a 08 550i, i would get a 2012 or 13 535i if i had to make a move from my 550i. But i much rather stick to the 550i. I cant afford a brand new 550i so i just enjoy the second handed fully loaded BMW's. In my opinion BMW's lose to much value in the first 3 years for me to buy one brand new.

Well this is kinda true, most of the problems with the E60's were ironed out by te last year of its life. They also warranty the HPFP for an extended amount of time.

What year 550i do you have and what year 535i are you looking at?

I don't own either yet. I drove an 08 550 and loved it. I haven't drove a 535 yet, but have drove a few 335i's.

I'm looking at 08-10's and have been leaning toward a 535.

Prices are about the same for 550 vs 535 2008-10, I'd still go with the 550 - which is exactly what I did. Couldn't be happier.

I was in the market for an 08-10 535. I really wanted one with the MTech body , and they were so hard to find at reasonable prices and I couldn't fins any near me.

I hadn't even driven a 550. I happened to see a 550 with the sport package (mtech body) and I loved it. as soon as I drove it, I gave up lookign for a 535. it seemed like a similarly equipped 550 was only about $2-4K more than a 535 and it was so much easier to find one with the M Body on it.

I'm happy with my purchase of an 08 550i.

There's a good reason for that, original 550 owners tend not to skimp on options (especially since they already were paying the V8 premium of nearly $10k) so it's much easier to find a very well equipped 550 than any other 5 series except the M5. Makes looking for the car of your dreams a lot easier.
