I think that these data from BMW UK support your point pretty well. Without providing the calculations, one might expect the 530i to be faster than the 535d. Similarly, one might expect the 540i to be considerably faster than the 535d.

.....................0-62.......Weight.........Max HP....Kilos/HP
530i SE..........6.7.....1575 kilos.....258/6600.....6.105
535d SE.........6.5.....1735 kilos.....272/4000.....6.379
540i SE .........6.3.....1725 kilos.....306/6300.....5.637
Must be the torque or power curves or sth else . I love the scientific approach you use in your posts. Respect...

Thank you for the compliment. Yes, hp/tq--tq from an overall perspective.

Could you please point out the torque data to help me better understand?

Thank you.

I don't have any torque data other than the max. torque values posted on BMW-UK--and, actually, I don't have them, but I could find them again if I wanted. The poster I replied to mentioned hp so I suported his idea using hp values--in the context of comparative weight/hp ratios.

The same general idea probably would follow using, perhaps, average or maximum torque or average hp instead of maximum hp--where the general idea is that common measures related to acceleration may tend to imply that diesels are faster given appropriate comparability. This tendency becomes more apparent when weight/acceleration-related measure ratios for noncomparable cars are compared because one seldom finds a diesel and a petrol car that are mostly comparable on essentially all pertinent dimensions--especially weight and the chosen acceleration-related measure.

Let me jump into the frey here with my old decrepit 645Ci with only 20,200 miles as I am just barley limping along and not sure I could muster enough grunt to handle a 535d.

Now I have not gone thru every thread and picked out the best numbers for the 535d, so I used only the data available in FastSaloons as a comparison. You are certainly free to take your own sources of 535d data for comparison against my 645 numbers. I just wanted to point out that I can only find one measure that I cannot best in the data FastSaloons presented. Oh, and for some reason or other the floor under my gas pedal is still holding up just fine.

Here are a couple of charts for your reviewing pleasure: Enjoy

The comparo:

I have fond memories of this thread and don't want to see it forgotten

But anyway ... I noticed a bizarre article in the latest EVO magazine - which group tested cars towing a fiat panda (slowest car in the UK) at Santa Pod - to find the fastest tow car

Anyway the 535d results (without the panda on tow) were as follows :

0-60 (measured with a race logic VBOX) - 5.81 secs

1/4 mile (measured by santa pod) - 14.59 secs

Kind of backs up the fast saloon data.

I thought the 535d results (without the panda ) were interesting as they seem to replicate the fastsaloons data and they are based on official santa pod times

Thanks needforspeed, nice thread. 645i sure has some grunt.
