ok , ill get the summer rims tomorrow, and ill let you know
as for the second comment. I kind of understand you, having access to only one car, i would not be suprised if i replied like you.
Strangely enough the owner of the m3 also drives an X5 3.0d like mine, and is absolutely impressed by it... oh and BTW i
saw him in chervilo last friday, boy did he laugh when i told him about your comparison on the 645i vs 535d.

and btw dont reserve your judgement for something you have not
1)extensively driven
2)have access to/own.

believe me no matter how much you praise your 535d, there are at least 10 cars in BMW's line-up that are quicker/better

As for your second comment pls dont try and analyze me or misinterpret my words. X5 is great car it just wouldnt be able to drive over my 535 (if it were a Land Rover then maybe). Last time I checked this was a 535/545 topic and you own neither. I just posted my comments on why the 535 did it for me. My butt dyno told me so because I drove 645 on two occasions and then the diesel. IMHO the diesel is the better and also faster car 99% of the time. Thats all. I never said it was the best or fastest BMW. Far from it. I've driven petrol cars all my life and I am more than pleasantly surprised by my torquemesiter. In fact for some reasons diesels tend to be faster than petrol cars with the same weight and hp. Not to mention their massive potential for relaxed high speed cruising. Just a happy owner...

I wonder whether the 535D would beat the 545i over 500miles/800km?

I think that these data from BMW UK support your point pretty well. Without providing the calculations, one might expect the 530i to be faster than the 535d. Similarly, one might expect the 540i to be considerably faster than the 535d.

.....................0-62.......Weight.........Max HP....Kilos/HP
530i SE..........6.7.....1575 kilos.....258/6600.....6.105
535d SE.........6.5.....1735 kilos.....272/4000.....6.379
540i SE .........6.3.....1725 kilos.....306/6300.....5.637

Err.. excuse me for bringing Physics into this but doesn't torque - and where in the rev range it is delivered - have something to do with this.

As well as being able to do 500 miles on a tankful...

It really is a shame that we cannot get the "d" here in USA as I am sure they would have many proponents. Since I cannot compare using the highly accurate BUTT dyno I am left to resort to reported numbers, whether someone else's or my own. I will not argue over whether your BUTT dyno is more accurate than another's but I can lay out the numbers and let others draw their own conclusion. I am not and would not try to convince you of what you have already determined and are completely happy with. And should it come to pass - I hope it will be sooner rather than later - that the US can get to play with BMW diesels I sure would give them a try. A 635d or, if later, a 645d would be fantastic to try out. Especially when we know there is so much more room for improvement thru chipping than with the petrol types. It would be really special if we could get some modded and unmodded 535d's to get on the accelerometer band wagon so we all could play "virtual" drags. Hell, we could even do some road course stuff if we find some common ground (lateral g's over specific corner types or same courses), even if we cannot meet face to face. I know plenty of cars that beat mine in drag or road course, but I have lots of fun with what I got regardless.

As is normal when no quote given ... the preceding post.

But just to remove potential ambiguity I will help by quoting...

At the other extreme there are those who quote entire posts for no apparent reason...

As for my original point (535d versus 545i over a 500 mile distance) - there seem to be no takers.

Are those 545i owners chicken or something?

no need to get defensive. As for the 645i, i think you may have driven a 630i... now that would be slower

Oh, well, you replied to the wrong person. I didn't make the point you are questioning. Incidentally, we are about being polite on our forums. I have seen only two of your posts, and they strike me as being somewhat smart @ss and impolite. Please refrain.

Sorry, I know nothing about your original point. Nor am I interested in it.
