I have been away for a while but not that long! Come on guys this is one long thread. Just to make it a bit longer...
I have a test from a German mag somewhere (will try to dig it up) where they compare 535d and 545 the former was quicker to 140 km/h if I remember correctly. It also posted better lap time. There you have it, 535d is the doggs.

Fair enough - I didn't know the 535d was only in step - and now I do so thanks
Now we are quits... what shall we argue about next ?

not true the smg is directly borrowed from Formula 1. BMW's m-logic smg provides the quickest possible shifts in any gearbox... at 75milliseconds each , the same as a formula 1 car

i hope you are in no way saying that the SMG found in the 545i/550i is in any way comprable to the m5/m? you are very much mistaken

Edit: SMG is faster at changing gears, but I think overall steptronics are faster because it removes driver eroor and picks the optimum shift points (in most cases).

Maybe on M cars, but on the E60 saloon Steptronic is faster in my opinon.
OK, any challenges on this claim. (not necessarily by 525dse or 700700).
700700, can you estimate a similar duration for any SMG? I am all ears, and totally curious.Edit: I am not sure on the optimal shift point idea. Please see posts 34, 45, and 49 on this thread. They will lead you eventually to post 293 on this one. I think 293 is the last post I made on the topic, but there may be one more. If I find it, then I'll let you know.

no unfortunately, the only camparison side by side i could make was with the 745li (which many believe has a quicker auto gearbox than the e60) and the m3 in s6 shift mode, and i could swear that the smg shifts were indeed quicker
