545i 6spd hard to drive?
#1
I wanted to find out from other owners if thier car is like mine. A few months ago I purchased a 545i with 75k miles and I still am having difficulty making a smooth engagement into first gear.
I noticed that the accelerator pedal is VERY touchy. I hooked it up to my scan tool and noticed that it is showing 100% throttle when pushing the gas about halfway down. I'm thinking this might be a problem to look in to. It seems like I touch the gas pedal a little and it'll rev to 1000rpm, and a hair more and it revs to 3500. Is that normal?
Is there any way to calibrate the pedal?
Thanks for your help

Nope, no way my car behaves like that. I've had mine since 2004 and it drives like it has since the day I picked it up - smooth 1st gear engagements, linear throttle response.
vkhong may have a good lead on possible mods done to your car before you bought it... From what I recall, the throttle is also completely electronic - don't know if someone flashed your car's ECU / chipped it.

Has someone (maybe the prior owner) fitted a Sprint Booster? It might explain the throttle calibration issue.

Thanks for the responses.
No its not my first car, but my first manual although I have driven stick before/ used to own a motorcycle.
Anyway I puchased an OBD cable and got the BMW DIS software running and it even shows what I was saying before. Pushing the pedal slightlty the car is registering at 10% throttle, and another hair more it jumps to 36%. The software is also showing 100% throttle at less than half the pedal. I hooked up the same software to my sister's Mini Cooper and it shows linear throttle response from 0-100 like I would expect. I guess I'll purchase an new pedal and see if it fixes the problem. I would think it would show a code though if the pedal was broken though...
I did the Clutch Delay Valve a few weeks ago thinking that might be the issue, but now I'm starting to think its a crazy accelerator pedal. From what I'm reading online, I dont think they can be calibrated.

Maybe it has the dumbest mod of all time, a sprint booster. The mod that everyone on this forum feels is necessary, so they have the illusion of their car being faster. Sprint boosters are the glass packs of the 21st century.

This is my second BMW and AFAIK this is just how they are. My E92 335i was my first one and I learned quickly that these cars give full power with the pedal halfway depressed. You would just have to get used to it.
Now the pedal is drive by wire so technically it can be recalibrated. Technically, as in I don't know if people do this and there is a product available. I just recommend getting used to it. Its even easier with the 6MT, as my 335i was manual, to get used to.

I didn't realize that the OP had already done the CDV mod. From the sound of it, the throttle has been recalibrated or a Sprint Booster was installed. I do not know how to visually identify a Sprint Booster installation. Perhaps someone with one could assist.
