Does the european model have a bit more hp? Probably doesn't make a difference in performance, but why the difference?

I think the difference is the way the US calculates BHP , it was the same in the M3 i had in the UK, 341bhp but in the US it was 333

Emissions control in USA is a bit more strict so hence the relative "detune"

I've found the following infos. Maybe they help a little to confuse us even more.

BHP = Brake Horse Power

Engine power is often quoted in PS.
* 1PS=0.9863bhp.

HP = Horse Power. Horse power is defined as torque (in ft.lbs) multiplied by RPMs divided by 5252. Do a search on the 'net for an explanation about Watt and horses and why it's called what it is.

BHP = Brake Horse Power. Horse Power that is measured from the crankshaft via an engine brake (dyno). This implies that the motor is running and thus accounts for accessories.

PS = Pferdest?rke. Basic translation from German is Horse Power. It is virtually the same as HP, but multiplied by 1.01 (think Metric HP).

kW = Kilowatt. True metric representation of power. HP divided by 1.341 will yield kW output.

And another source...

PS = PferdeSt?rke ("Horse power" in German )

It's the continental version of hp, but to make it into convenient units (75 kilogramme metres per second) it has a slightly smaller value than one horsepower. It's commonly used by all manufacturers now, although magazines etc. tend to use PS and BHP interchangeably.

ps = bhp x 1.01387

Probably the only difference is that European HP numbers are DIN, US are SAE. These are different test methods, and include different specs on the atmospheric conditions, number of accessories hooked up etc. SAE HP typically runs 1-2% less than DIN.

It's not detuned because of stricter emissions. It's a different standard and testing method. As mentioned above, US models alsways show ~2% less.
