Well, I love my 545i, the best BMW I've owned (close with the 98' M3 Sedan). But just this weekend we picked up our 2005 SL55 AMG and although a very different car, there is no way a 545i can catch it. And surprisinlgy the SL55 handles exceptionally well. I spent a good part of Saturday and Sunday on the Taconic, Sprain Brook and the Saw Mill, great roads to enjoy a fast ride.

The only thing I would give up my daily driver 545i for is an M5 (hopefully next year) but dont discount all Mercedes as inferior.

[quote name='narf' date='Mar 28 2005, 03:00 PM']exactly what i was thinking. i mean, we can keep arguing that our bmws are better cars (because they are), but you cant really argue with twin turbo charged 6-litre V12.

It's easy to get carried away by winning a single race with a SL500. Of course, the SL65 is an AMG that outputs 604hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Although it weighs about 700 lbs more than the M5, it has nearly double the torque of the M5. MB claims it does 0-60mph in 4.2 sec (while BMW claims the M5 does 0-60mph in 4.7 sec). There's an article in one of the magazines about the SL65 doing a quarter mile in the mid 11s. In any event, MB can argue that the SL65 blows the doors off the M5 (for about $100K more)....

Read an article recently where they took out the SL65 .. quite simply they said too much power for the chasis, and too much torque for the TC to handle.
They simply classed it as" scary", and that they'd take the SL55 anyday.
The guy was approaching a motorway from a slip road, saw 2 trucks on the motorway and thought he'd put his foot down and enter the motorway ahead of them. As soon as he did this, he lost the rear (in a straight line) and by the time the TC cut in he was facing the wrong way heading for the motorway.

Yep, those AMG Mercs are no joke.

Congrats on your new ride! I know this is a Bimmer forum but I'd love to see pics of the Benz just the same.

Sounds like the reporter who wrote the article needs to learn how to drive!

The SL55 and SL600 have the same hp (493), but the SL600 has more torque (590 lb-ft vs. 516 lb-ft). The SL65 is a beast -- it has 111 more hp and 738 lb-ft of torque; unfortunately, much of this 738 lb-ft of torque is not useful, even if the TC cuts in. In the auto magazine I read re: the SL65, they turned off the TC at a race track and it was able to do a 1/4 mi in mid 11s. Even the 516 lb-ft of the SL55 is not shabby -- but only a qualified driver can really use such vast amounts of torque without the mishaps you describe above.
