I did a speedometer indicated 160 mph a while back and it got there pretty quickly. Everything is a bit twitchy at that speed but I am sure it will pull another twenty six mph.

What makes you sure it'll get to 186mph? That's a big speed given the available power.

Because it got to 160 very cleanly.

Do you guys really think that you will notice the 35 HP & 30lb/ft of torque difference from the '45 to the'50?? That's a just a bit over 10% and the effect of engine power increase on performance isn't linear, so I think it would be barely noticeable, if at all.? You'd probably notice a bigger difference between driving the same car on hot day vs. a cool day. I'd have a hard time spending any money for that.

At any given moment its 35 more HP & 30 ft/lbs of torque but remember back to High School math, its the area under the curve. Overlay a 545 hp/torque curve and a 550 hp/torque curve. The area after you subtract the 545 from the 550 is the real increase over the rev band.
That is the approximate difference between the 525 and the 530. Which would you rather have?

Of course I'd rather have the '50, but at what cost? Would it really be all that noticeable all the time? I doubt it. But then I'd have braggin' rights that I could whip a '45, I suppose.

The smile on your face would make it noticable "all the time."
Only kidding, they make the 525,530, & 550 so you get to pick what you want. I think there are even more engine sizes outside of US, not even counting diesels. They sell they least of the 545s, so there are compelling reasons to get the smaller motors. I had a 97 528, 2002 525 and now 2004 545 and I loved them. Incidently my 97, which was the first year body style had a lot of problems as does my 545, which is also the first year body style, but I never had a single problem with my '02 525

I suspect you're being "optimistic" but I look forward to seeing the GPS verified top speed picture I think you'll need circa 400bhp to go much over 180.

Here we go again...!!!

PS. Remember this? 0-100
The initial conclusion that came to mind was that the limiter kicked in too early for this car. I don't know about 186, but I felt I had plenty more to go, and I can assure you 160 came as easy as a breeze.
Regarding the power ( not torque ), my old Maserati 222 hit 270km with less than
250hp.

It's all about thrust/weight ratio.

Which doen't tell you anything about the 545i given the non-linear relationship between power and top speed. An Alpina B10 has 375bhp but tops out at 177mph. How can a 545i with 328bhp reach 186mph, just because "it got to 160 cleanly"?

As for "thrust / weight" ratio, not sure what you mean by "thrust" (I'd have thought that torque was the nearest automotive equivalent) but surely it's power, weight, gearing, aerodynamic drag and transmission loss. The 545i just weighs too much / isn't slippery enough to pull a GPS verified 186. I'll put money on it.

P.S. Your Maser was doing well didn't the 222 have a published top speed on approx 143mph - somewhat off your 165mph claim. Was that what the speedo was over-reading at, or was that a verified top speed?

OK mate, no worries.
Like I said, I don't know about 186, but had plenty more to go. I would say that even your diesel would have some more in it beyond the 155 limit.

BTW, next time I need a top speed check on my previous cars, I'll give you a call....

LOL - Andy, sorry - cars - what can I say I love them.

Don't get me wrong - I think it would be great if an unrestricted 545i would do 186 - I just don't think it's possible. I agree re the 535d - mine at 334bhp - Rob at DMS reckons he's had almost 170mph with more to come, but I'll need a trip to the autobahn to confirm that.
