I?ve been talking to my SA about this (I?ve had it in twice to see if they could fix it, they can?t). And as it turns out they have two other people complaining (loudly) about the same problem (good for me, I?m not the only one that my SA is hearing it from). Last week they escalated to BMW and I got a call yesterday saying they were getting special software in today to fix the problem. I asked if the software was simply an upgrade to the overall software or something specific for the tranny?she commented that it was just for the tranny. They?re trying it another car first and I?ll be making my appt on Tues to bring the car in?fingers crossed it?ll work.
She did make the comment that X5?s had a similar problem a while back and that was eventually fixed via software?

Wife's new e60 545 with ~400 miles and 16.2....she called me and said "the transmission slammed into gear and at first I thought a car had hit from me behind".
Didn't think much about it until I saw this thread.....asked and she stated that she was in drive (not sport or manual) and was almost to a stop when she accelerated.
Hopefully 1) won't happen again or 2) there is a software update to fix.
Otherwise she (and I) love the car!!!

My Ride: 2005 545i born July 13, 2005, Jet Black with Black Dakota leather interior, 6 speed manual transmission, with sports package, premium sound package, cold weather package and satellite prep...persistence overcomes resistence!
Sorry in advance if this question demonstrates my ignorance, but is this "slamming" issue happening accross transmissions (ie., manual, smg and automatic) or only some subset - if so which? Is it happening only to 545's? Only with the sports package?
thanks,
edl

Mine is brand new, so far no slam. I had this happen all the time in my A6, drove me crazy, and dealer said there was nothing that could be done. Trannys built for both makes by same mfg., ZF. Hope it doesnt materialize in my new 5.

Well, it finally happened to me, the dreaded SLAM! I have to admit, I was reading these posts with some skepticism and even voted in this poll as not having had it happen, previously, but while I was driving my wife's car on Sunday Morning, it happened.
I was driving about 45mph in the rain in DS. I decided to make a left turn into a parking lot before a major intersection to avoid construction/red light/traffic at the intersection. The parking lot entrance was right before the intersection. As I slowed down rapidly to about 5 mph, (The Entrance to the Parking Lot was pretty inclined) I started to accelerate, once hitting the incline and BAM! The car jerked like it we got rear ended. I thought we really did. My wife asked me, what was that. It was funny, as she was very upset, thinking we got hit, and I was laughing, smiling like a cat who ate the canary, as I knew exactly what it was. I said it was the SLAM! She looked at me like I was crazy. Since she drives the car most of the time, I asked her if this had happened to her, and she said, never. I had to explain to her about this list and how everyone was describing it and so forth. Those that have experienced this, I am sorry about my skepticism. I believe brotha's. I have seen the light.
The car has the Steptronic and has 13,000 miles on it. I believe it has 16.2 on the 'puter. I guess I will take it to the dealer and get it looked at.
I am going to try and repeat what I did to see if I can get it to SLAM again.
Thanks to an excellent resource like this one.
e60.net ROCKS!!!
Regards,
Michael

Thats how my slams usually/mostly happened with my SMG pre 16.x but after its gotten A LOT better... theres still some rough spots but no hard slams like before... since its software... if it happens like once every LONG while its ok... its software theres always a glitch... so i'm not suprised that its not 100% fixed as long as it doenst happen frequently... no more than once every few months...
