Does anyone know what the 545 will do at the 'ring?
I've read M3s and 911s can do around 8:15 and the M5 is about 8min flat.
I know its a trivial piece of info, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

Depends on driver and traffic...

Sorry if I wasn't clear before - I meant the best possible scenario - no traffic with a professional driver. For example, the 8:15 time for a 911 was set by Walter Rohrl, Porsche factory test driver in a 997 Carrera. What would a 545i do in these kinds of conditions?

And I read somewhere that people claim the 535d is faster around the 'ring than a 545. Does anyone have the times?

This topic is tasty.

The Ring is open for almost anyboby with guts.

Do we get any actual readings from members?

M5 or M6 drivers?

Sorry, but no info on the 545 on the "Ring." But, in the September 2005 Motor Trend there is an article on the new Corvette Z06, "Z06 Hot Laps the 'Ring"

Some times are given for other cars on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The article points out that "Nordschleife lap times have become bragging rights for any automaker." "Porche test driver Walter Rohrl says any good driver can achieve an eight-minute 40 second lap in a standard 911. Learn the track-- where the bumps are-- and you might get that down to the low eights. Anything under eight minutes means a good car. And a good driver."

The Nordschleife Hall of Fame (unofficial lap times from various sources)
Porsche Carrera GT- 7 min 32 sec
Chevrolet Corvette Z06- 7 min 42 sec
Porsche 996 GT2- 7 min 42 sec
Pagani Zonda S- 7 min 44 sec
Lamborghini Murcielago- 7 min 50 sec
Lamborghini Gallardo- 7 min 52 sec
Mercedes-McLaren SLR- 7 min 52 sec
Chevrolet Corvette C6- 7 min 59 sec
Porsche 911- 8 min 07 sec
Dodge Viper GTS- 8 min 10 sec

Niki Lauda's 1975 German GP Pole Lap Ferrari 312 B3- 6 min 58 sec

Lap Record: Stefan Fellof, Porsche, 956, 1983- 6 min 11 sec.

Lauda and Bellof times set on slightly different track configuration.

I've done 9:30 around the ring. And that's in a car not setup for great cornering ability as a M3 or 911 (a Porsche 928 - 320BHP). I suspect that a 545i or 535d would give similar times.

My time was set without driving on the limit or abusing the car, and on road tyres. (I needed to get home in one piece). So the "professional" time should be about 8:30 - 8:45.

Cup tyres would help. Stiffer suspension would help.

Don't forget that the public times are usually "bridge to gantry", which deletes the time on the main straight (the start/finish for public laps). AFAIK the professional times are for a full lap (about 20-30 seconds more).

Been on the BMW Course at the Ring (closed circuit) for the last few days - managed a 9.31 full lap (not BTG) in my DMS 535d. Am absolutely convinced it could be faster. Got video footage of the full lap so when I get back home (writing this from the Dorint Hotel, Nurburg at the moment) I'll post a link.
