The noise is very loud when cold. I can still feel and hear it when hot. People whom have been in my car oftenly ask about the tapping noise. I am tired of trying to explain the cause and that this is normal (maybe not). One of my client who was in the market for a midsize luxury car bought a mercedes E500 after riding in my car. He called me afterwards to thank me for helping him to decide his purchase. I was praising about BMW the whole trip, but the tapping noise he heard was just unexcusable. BMW should pay me not to give rides before they fix my car.

I still love my car though

My car has a noticible vibration at idle, without any tapping noise. Is this covered by this bulletin, or is it something else?

All, finally got my car back, what a diffrence! The noise "tapping" is completely gone and the car is noticably improved at and off idle. Seems like night and day. Getting the windows tinted today and then hitting the road for a little joy ride. Thanks to all here for the help.

Hi Epochii:

My 545i vibrates at 1200rpm. I went to Nally BMW, they said it was normal. I just wonder which dealer did you go. I may try different dealer in Atlanta area. Thanks

[quote name='Epochii' date='Apr 4 2005, 10:00 PM']Just a quick update, SA just called to say that my car will not be ready until Thursday now......The original estimate was 1-2 days, Thursday will make it two weeks.? I'm really hoping that this valve train repair will solve the "tapping" noise from the valvetrain.? Something just doesn't feel right about this whole issue.? First they were to replace all the valve levers, then one side, no all again.? They indicate that BMW is directing the tech...does this sound right?

Just frustrated.....car only has 5,000 miles.... :'(

Hmmm...so they're replacing the valves just on the argument of "tapping noise''
and not the rough running as stated in the bulletin. Correct?
I mean I can hear the tapping as well between 1500-2200rpm - but I'm wondering if I need this and the dealer will cover me under the pretext of that bulletin
Anyway, mine is not excessive or anything - as I mentioned my chief mechanic stated it's normal for Valvtronic engines, but I'm concerned now....

Anyone else with a 545i can hear a definite valve tapping under load 1500-2200rpm, usually cold engine?? You need to have a quiet cockpit and focus on hearing the engine.
More feedback would be appreciated, next time you start your 545i.

TIA

i always wondered what that noise was.when i asked about it my sa said that was normal.but now i now something was definetly wrong when the my car started to backfire(not misfire ok).now that i've found this bulletin i'm gonna shove it in his face along with all the other problems i've been having with this car
