535i owners needed...for the new guy

First off let me say I'm a convert from Audi which I have had no issues with so I understand reading forums with tons of people who don't even own the cars making bigger deals out of things (like preventive maintenance) than they are. I keep up with the maintenance to avoid being stranded in a really nice expensive paper weight haha.

So I pretty much fell in love with a 2008 535i and I hear some great things and horrible things. I have read through the archives a little and all the post seem to be 2013 and older. Since it is now 2017 i thought I would ask for some wisdom with people who have owned these cars for sometime. There are a few 535i i am considering ranging from 76k -116k they are all clean title and look well maintained. Although a good detail can do that to a car. I have read of water pump issues ....and so forth

Are there any drivers out there with a 535i over 200k? Any 535i drivers out there past 150K that still enjoy the car?

This should make you feel better, at least it did for me.

Thank you

Thank you...put me a little more at ease still going back and forth between that purchase of an e60 and an e34 which would require putting in some work...those are my two favorite BMW body styles

My local indy told me it costs approximately $3.00 per day to maintain and cover any repairs on a past warranty BMW. Some years you will just have oil changes and one year you might have a big ticket item... but I like that perspective. Worth the price of admission in my opinion. Good luck.

I can relate. My 535, purchased 08/12, has been fairly trouble-free. Oil changes and spark plugs for the first 4 years, then WHAM! brakes, a radiator and sundry other work this spring. I'm sure it'll be back to oil changes for a few years once again.

I budget about 2000$ a year for about 20 000 kms/yr or 0.10$/km or about 5.50$ a day. This for a 320K kms 2005 545.

Good luck.

I have 147k on my 08 535xi. I'm the second owner. I did spark plugs and walnut last when I first got it. Only issue I had was water pump failure which I had my local Indy do. I ordered parts. My car might be a unicorn but at 147k I have oringal hpfp, original turbos, original injectors and no issues out of them. I have done most bolt on mods and have had a jb4 and MHD. No issues. Highly recommend these cars. I have a oil filter housing gasket that needs to be addressed in the future but it isn't bad yet. Just no time to do the work
