Anyway, so far the car seems to be running great so let's see in the long run.
Wow, I've never heard of this happening to anyone before. Tell your friend to get used to having the dealer contacting Germany for diagnosis help. It is very common and it does not point to a bad dealer. These cars are quite complicated and they can' possibly train their techs for every possible malfunction on the car.

Anyway, I hope this takes care of the problem. You should make your friend aware of the HPFP problem with this model and the very real possibility of getting stranded with no prior warning. Other than that, the 535 is a great car.

YUP -- -- in the future they'll beam the car up to the "Mother Ship" for diagnosis ?

My first good deed of the day...

I hope that the replacement Transmission holds up. Do you know if it was the Step or the SAT transmission. Would be and interesting addition to this story.

I actually had a similar situation within one mile of leaving the dealership when I picked up my 535I last fall. With all the published issues surrounding the fuel pump, I was thinking the worse. The problem was traced back to a loose wire harness plug which could lose contact created the problem.
I am happy to report almost 10,000 miles and no issues and loving the 535I!

Had a similar thing happen on my 2010, 5351 x-drive, manual trans, after 1,400km.
Drove it for one week in Germany after Euro pick-up, everything was fine.
Back home, with only another 100km on it, under pretty hard acceleration, uphill in the rain, I lost power and got a similar "X-drive Malfunction Error".
Also lost power and went to limp mode (like my old Acura did weekly) pulled over and after a minute or two it ran fine again. I did not shut it Off, so that the dealer could see The warning light (dash) and message (screen) stayed ON.
Went directly to the dealer, only 10km, and they checked it over. The message(s) did turn off after shuting the ignition Off.
They could find nothing wrong. It has not happened since, >3,000km now.
Maybe your friend was just getting a little frisky with the pedal.
