535i fuel pump

The HPFP issue intriques me.
Does anyone including BMW know what causes the failure/s or at least have a clue??
I have heard that the fuel may be an issue but that is bogus. It is strange that when a car has a failure, that that same car has repeated failures??? - sometimes.
It seems that this is the ultimate driving enigma!!

Nothing Official...
At first it was the Ethanol in our gas, but the issue is also happening in Europe with low/no ethanol content gas...
It is a wide spread issue not just traced to one model. Every model year N54 has had issues with it.
They have gone threw 2 parts manufactures and 7 generations of the HPFP ( two of the gens were rebuilt bad pumps with newer parts )
I've talked with some engineers and Master mechanics at great lenght , and nothing official, but most have agreed that BMW should of licensed the part from BOSCH instead of going at it with their own design. To my knowledge V.A.P.G. have not had many if any wide spread issues on their HPFP's , which was licensed and built by Bosch, and they have had it in more wide spread cars too.
BMW has already started to Phase the N54 out for the N55 and this past weekend even announced a performance version of the n55 in the "answer to a question that no one asked " X6, which was not expected. They had the n55 as the "base" turbo engine , with a more refined higher strung and better cooled N54 as the performance motor in the "iS" line of Z4's and E9Xs and E8X's... but it looks like they may have finally given up on it totally ... which is a shame since other than a couple issues it is a Awesome power plant.
The name of the game is reduced emissions and better gas mileage and the valvetronic N55 with only one turbo seems to fit that bill.
There are some tuners that are working on "fixed" HPFPs so check out the E90's forums and they may have one soon, but I kinda think it would have been sorted out by now by BMW with the R&D and engineering budgets that they have.
