Wow $31k for a 2008 535i with 100k CPO and 100k maintenance warranty is one heckuva deal. However, the fact that it was lemoned already would probably make me pass on it. There's a reason it's cheap. I think the headache and worry of having problems arise is not worth saving the extra $3-$8k on a similar alternative. A CPO 550 would be an awesome way to go, especially since he's not a car fanatic and probably would not mod it.

No one knows the long term issues with the motor constantly going in to limp mode. Fuel injectors , the Dist rail, and LPFP are now starting to get replaced with alarming regularity on N54 motored cars....

If it was lemoned usually that is 3 replacements of the part in 12 months.....

just as an FYI: member bigbadbull has had a long history with the HPFP being replaced multiple times, to the point where his 535i was lemoned...

its an unfortunate experience indeed, but online reporting of HPFP can somewhat be biased, as one will tend to report when there are problems, not where there are no problems....

either way, can't go wrong with either choice....

Get the 550. I love mine. It is just about the perfect all around car. No HPFP problems and if you get a LCI sport package one, you get the M Tech kit and the 172s.

And the 535's exhaust note/engine noise does not compare with the 550.

Of course, if you friend is willing to tune the 535, he can make is more powerful and faster than the 550.

In any event, I would steer clear of any Lemon Law buyback car -- even if your friend ultimately decides to cast his lot with the 535.

personally, my car is going to go back into the shop for the 3rd time for HPFP in the past 2 months. I just got it back a week ago and I just started having long cranks again yesterday.

The HPFP is such a big problem, I will never own another BMW. I have been clowned around so much with this HPFP. I have never been so angry at a car in my entire life.

Some 535 have never had any of those problems including mine. It's been a great car and still would have made the same choice again. I would however stay away from a Lemon car.

That just sucks Craig. It is time to lemon law your ride. If you get the 550, you'll get similar performance (actually, a shade better) and no HPFP issues.

For those of you who were on pins and needles wondering what my friend chose...

2007 550i - Gray, sport, CWP, Premium, Nav, L7 - should be delivered later this week depending on snow

Essentially the same car as my '06 save color and MT

Thanks for the advice.
