why to choose studded? good non-studded outperform studded tyres in accelarating and breaking on snow/ice.
Says who? Do you have any proof/reference - particularly on ice?

the problem is i dont have test results in english. few test results are available in english, as most of the time the nordic winter tyres are not for western europe market.
if you read russian (they do big tests as their winters are 'real') i can look and paste it here. i never compramise on safety and did a big research before buying winter tyres.

myself, i had nokian hakka Q model (its not made anymore as replaced by newer and more advanced) and they were better than most of the studded tyres. i also had about 3 differen studded tyre models - so quite an extensive experience . the secret of the good non studded winter tyres - soft rubber (but not only that), that is why they spead limit is 170 km/h.

I have to say that best defend against the icy road is between ears. With the power You (we) have there is no tyre which can give You anything like summer conditions. Nokian Hakka ismaybe closist. WITH studs on ice, without on snow.

Sorry there is no perfect compromise!

Hi,

we now have snow up here in Finland, and I'm finding my 535d gives me rubish traction in snow/ice. It has Dunlop Wintersport SPP (I think) RFT friction tyres.

What do You think, will a new set of tires get the traction to acceptable levels (I know it's no 4x4), or should I give up and get a RangeRover or new X5?

What tyres would You recomend for Nordic snow-conditions?

bw, Staffan
Not much one can do with 500-600 Nm:s of torgue with RWD, ice/snow is slippry.

Did testdrive a 325xiA early this week with studded SSR Conties,
the studds where nice but the xDrive did facinate!

The new E70 3.0d would suit you guys you good and/or the facelifted E61 530xdTA.

Cool

I changed my Dunlop Wintersport M3's to Nokians Hakka 5's

Oh dear, oh dear....

... my lazy, slippery, lousy winter-car transformed

I now get just the right amount of controlled tail-exuberance combined with enough grip to get me going
this is a tyre I can recommend for Nordic drivers.
