I haven't actively posted in this site since I turned in the my 05 545 a few years back. I leased a range rover sport supercharge. The SUV is an absolute pig when it comes to fuel in todays market (9 mpg in the city). The car goes back in November and so I must figure out my next car situation. Since it doesnt snow in NYC anymore I dont need to have 2 SUV's.

Since Ive turned in the 545 (SMG) it appears that there has been quite a bit of progress in terms of technology for the E60 platform. My wife has always said that it was her favorite car that we have ever owned. I am absolutely obsessed with the rise of gas prices in the US and I do hope we will top out here (at 4.50 / gal) and begin to drop as we get closer to elections in USA, I want to make sure the car that we get next will be pretty efficient with fuel.

My buddy just ordered a prius and he told me its a 4 month wait list to get what must be considered one of top 10 ugliest cars ever made. I must say i am intrigued with the idea of getting 45-50 MPG. Im just not sure if I can live with the a 100 HP car that looks like it hit a wall.

I never thought I would ever go back to another BMW (maintenance issues on E46 M3) but I am intrigued with the idea of the 535D getting 35 + MPG and that new paddle shift auto transmission.

I searched this board as well an internet and it appears that that X5 and the 335d are first up to hit US but I am not clear of when, if at all, the 535d will come to the US. i am wondering if anyone has ordered one or if they have good reliable information for delivery to the states?

Im also wondering what type of MPG 535 (gas) owners are getting in the city and highway? Especially if you live in NYC or California.

I did simple math and with cost of diesel being slightly higher it stilll appears that you are ahead of the curve if the diesel get at last 10 MPG better than the equivalent gas (petrol) engine. If the gas 535 get 27MPG and the 535d gets 35-37 MPG is would be worth it to go with the diesel engine. Unless of course my math is off.

Is it possible to import a 535D to America on your own? I doubt this would be possible but I have a friend who did something like that about 10 years ago.

Lastly, I just cant imagine waiting 4 months for the prius. That on top of the fact that the 2009 1/2 prius is rumored to cost less and get 75MPG with the plug in and is a much better looking auto.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm not happy with my 535d (pre-LCI) consumption. It gets close to 20mpg in the city and 40mpg on the highway. I'd suggest 530d if low consumption is your main concern.

Please forget Prius that's for posers, not for environmentalists! It's only Toyota showcase, they wanted to be the 1st, that's all.

I think Europe and USA have different service connectors so you warranty will void the 1st time you enter BMW Service. It's a protection for importing and exporting cars. US BMWs' cost silly money here in EU.

what 2009 1/2 prius with plug & play getting 75mpg.

no e60 diesel in usa, with maybe f10.

importing one won't be financially viable option.

thats what the rumor is on the prius.

maybe its not true.

i just woner what the real life MPG is for the 535d. it seems as though people on this board were getting 35 mpg average.

I do mixed driving, town and open road, sometimes sporty, ( probably most ) not especially long journeys, 20-25 mins, and I'm getting 30.5 mpg at the minute. Which I don't think is too bad

yes, the x5 3.0 diesel and the e9x diesels are coming but they scrapped the 535d in the e60 itteration.
They will bring it in the f10 model I think if the market continues the way it is.
Also, the diesel will be few grand more. I can't wait to drive one.
Modding a diesel can be pretty nice, low end torque up the wazzo...

I am getting c. 22 mpg in suburban driving and 28.5 in long-distance interstate driving in an 08 535xi. With diesel costing 11% more than premium (in CT at least), you would need >32 mpg with a diesel on the open road--very do-able. Of course the spread between gas and diesel could get wider.......
