Hi all, must say this site is a wealth of knowledge, a credit to you all and very enjoyable to browse.
I have an 05 535D sport that is going in for an oil service with the main dealer on Monday and just out of curiosity was wondering is there a variation on price from dealer to dealer. I am in northern Ireland by the way so really the stg price, sorry all you guys in the states and everywhere else!
I have been quoted approx ?200 for this so if any of you have been charged more-less would be interesting to know.

I've only had my 535d for 4 months so I've no experience of service charges as yet....

But ?200 for an oil change is scaring the pants off me to be honest!!!!???? Please tell me there's more involved.

No just straight forward oil service, I thought it was A little steep to be honest thats why I posted. I thought in or around ?120 / 130 would have been more like it. Im also getting an air condition recharge but thats ?40 quid extra.

Does an oil service include gearbox and diff oils as well as engine oil or is it just engine oil? If it's just engine oil, then surley that can only be about ?40 for the oil (at worst) and about 30 minutes labour to drive the car in the workshop, change the oil and drive it back out again? So even at ?100 per hour that's ?50. And then of course they'll valet the car too....

I'd love to see just how much time and effort goes into a ?200 oil service!

the last time i was in for an oil change, i paid 330 eur incl changing the filter. so i guess, 200 pounds is pretty much ok... we are talking about 8+l (each l is about 26 EUR) of expensive bmw oil, nearly as precious as gold

Chris,

If you get the opportunity, you MUST get a quote from as many $tealers as you can. I live in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of England-shire, but this means I have 5 or 6 $tealers about the same distance away. Prices for a service can vary by ?70, so it's worth a phone call or two.

Another good tip is to buy your own oil. As long as it is the correct type, then they will put it in for you. They will otherwise charge you around ?13 + VAT per litre of oil. You will be charged for the disposal of old oil, and oil filter too.

All they will do to your car is plug it in to the computer to check for fault codes, see if the dash warning lights work, reset the iDrive, change the engine oil and filter. NOTHING else.

What about such safety related items, like washer fluid, tyres, wipers and even lights you may ask. Every 4 years they get looked at. Scandalous. (This is the "Vehicle Check"). Brakes? No, they get looked at when the iDrive says so, and not before.

So for an inclusive ?200, that's about 15 minutes work, and maybe you get your car washed, but probably not valeted. And all probably done by a spotty faced 18 year old "technician" who wouldn't even know what the inside of an engine looked like, never mind how it worked. And yes, I am a card-carrying cynic!!

If it wasn't for the perception by a lot of used BMW buyers that a car must have a main dealer history, I would take my car to an Independant specialist, where my car can be worked on by people who know about our cars, have an enthusiasm for them, and understand our feelings for our cars, rather than a faceless entity that is little more than a computer plug.

End of Rant.

I have a 520d, and based on the 'first service' that contained an oil change, I recon I can calculate what id expect to pay.....
The 21k service was ?180ish, which included oil and filter and disposal and some other bits.

The oil alone was ?80 (!!!!!!!) and I know the garage charges ?93 / hr for labour. A filter (taking a guess cos i dont have the bill to hand) say ?12. Job should be max half hour, so id say

oil ? 80
labour ? 46
oil disposal ? 5
filter ?12

total ?143

with 17.5% tax = ?168 approx.

which looks a bit cosly for approx 4-5 litres of oil doesnt it?

I think that the premium for a BMW history may be a bit lower than you would expect, especially if you put some milage on. My car is on a PCP to do 4 years and 120k miles. New cost was ?24k, end of PCP value is ?7k. I wouldnt expect the difference between a BMW stamp and an independent garage stamp to mean that much to anyone buying a 4 year 120k miler - the fact its got all the stamps proving service should be convincing.

The reasons I will have mine BMW serviced are two fold. One, it saves the hassle of losing or compromising the warranty on a car that costs a fortune to fix in most cases and two, BMW might hit me with a bill at the end of the PCP on the perception that the car does have some kinda reduced value to them as you didnt have it main dealer serviced.

Under EU law, I think you can have any legitimate garage service the car, and if im not mistaken, use quality non bmw parts and not lose your warranty. Wether this works well in an argument at the service desk is something else.

Im tempted to change the brake pads myself if financially sound - ive been told by the dealer that fronts only will set me back ?120

If you are concerned that the Idrive cant be reset by anyone other than BMW - it can. There is info somewhere in this site that allows you to reset ALL the service counters via the cars Idrive and pressing the milometer reset button

I changed the front bake pads and rotors myself (with some help from one of my mechanic friends).

This was the first time we changed the brakes on the car since it was build. 117.000 km's on a set of pads and rotors

It was an easy job. The left hand side took us in total 50 min, and the right only 20 min, since we had figured it out how to do it

Rotors, brakepads and the brakepad sensor = DKK 3600 = ? 480, OEM BMW parts.

The car would like a Vehicle Check within 1000 km's. At our last Vehicle Check (@60.000 km), my dealer took a quick look at the car, checked the lights, the seatbealts and the windshield wipers..

Do anyone knows what the Vehicle Check involves at 120.000 km's ? Gearbox oil maybe??
