Hello everyone

Im soon going to be in the market for, possibly a 535D m Sport. I am very familar with this engine coming from a 335D prior to my S3.

However as well as the pre LCI 'only' putting out 272BHP ( I always re-map my cars by the way), how much better is the step box in the LCI, and the car in general, and what are the differences??

many thanks

Oli

First off, welcome on board Oli and enjoy the forums!

With regards to your question, the LCI (facelift) auto is significantly better than the pre-LCI auto. It responds much quicker and is better at choosing the right gear. The Sports Automatic Transmition, known as SAT, was introduced with the LCI and is even quicker and is highly regarded. You also get paddles on the wheel to shift gear in manual mode. I would strongly recommend the SAT, then the LCI auto. The old auto is, well, old

I'm sure other members, who have experienced the old and new autos will also chime in here soon......

Thank you, I suspect the 'old' auto is the same that was in my 2007 335d, and the reason I got rid of it was the box!!! Coming from two DSG equipped cars prior to the BMW, the box just felt....well sluggish.

Looks like it will be LCI Sport for me

If you are interested in the SAT transmission, one of members (moderators in fact) did a VERY detailed write-up on it! Click here to view the post. There is plenty of info and feedback to find there.

A 535d Sport with SAT sounds very nice -- happy shopping...

Be aware that Audi/VW DSG is faster than SAT

I have a 530D Sport Auto on demo for the weekend now, and cannot believe the speed of the gear change, compared to my old 335D, yes they are not DSG fast, but very, very quick all the same, I can't believe people wouldn't spec the auto box without the sport function @ ?100!!!

It wouldn't be a deal breaker if the car I was after didn't have it, but all the same, I'd prefer to have it - I will re-map whatever car I have, so just need to decide 30d or 35d now??? both would be adequately fast enough for me though, as eventually I will get a weekend toy as well

The new 235hp 30d is also a great engine! The 35d pulls stronger in high rpm (due to the 2nd turbo) and is amazingly fast (after remap). I can imagine that the 30d (remapped) will be more than enough for daily driving!
Although the 35d will probably have a better return value!

You've just said it...

I love my 530d, and although i'm running a agressive tune.... economy is good too...

535d:
272hp / 560nm
Forged block
2.56 diff ratio
Old gen gearbox

535d LCI:
286hp / 580nm
Aluminium block (only 20kg lighter)
2.65 diff ratio (shorter gears: Non-LCI 4300rpm = LCI 4500rpm)
New gen gearbox with paddles in the steering wheel.

Both remapped will achieve the same power numbers, and once remapped you won't notice that much the lag between the two gearboxes, because both torque converters will still waste alot of power while shifting.
