The ED version of this car is amazing...I've calculated that I could achieve 800 miles on a tankful - which is in line with that recent "BBC Top Gear" test where they went from Switzerland (I think) to Blackpool for the lights on ceremony...my previous diesel (Lexus 220d - 2.2d 4 pots Manual) was approx 12-15mpg WORSE than this 3.0l straight six Auto!! I even got barred from the Lexus Owners Club for Gloating!

Whenever you tell someone just how much economy you can get, you end up having to prove it!! Mine still only has a few 000 on the odo, and is loosening up all the time. In the last 2000 miles, the economy has gone up by 5-10%, and she still feels a bit tight. The oil consumption is zero (diesels of old always guzzled a litre very couple of thousands till 5-10,000 miles but this one doesn't).

This is such a good car - anyone reading this thread should embrace diesels - including our friends across the pond. The drive is superb, all that torque, and once warmed up the engine is a delight!

When I bought this baby, I went looking for a 530i, may be even a 525i. I'm so glad I took this car. I know derv is more expensive, but the sheer drive is truly excellent and the ED Diesels seem to be holding their value so much better too...and for good reason!

You know some diesel Audi's come with a special oil container in the boot and have a "top up" light because they use so much oil?

OK you can officially feel smug now!

And it appears to work...

Smugness resumed

Completely agree with your comments - a great car, a great engine and great driving experience. The fact this is all achieved with unbelievable fuel economy and virtually oil free consumption is even more amazing!

Mine has now covered 34k miles and the inside of the exhaust tail pipes are still spotless with no black soot deposits at all - unlike virtually all other diesels I've ever seen.

I said in a post above (and remember mine is a manual) that I achieved an incredible 63 mpg on a recent 'steady' 250 mile trip (admittedly I was hypermiling) that gave me a theoretic range of 970 miles!!!!! Even my usual motorway average of around 50 - 56 mpg would see 769 - 862 miles, AMAZING! OK, so the OBC may be 5-10% out, but those figures are truely amazing IMHO.

Now I wish I had a manual! Thing is, at the moment, there's no other car manufacturer that gets anywhere close to the diesel bhp/lbft/co2/mpg ratio that these cars get! The VAG group/Mercedes are just in the wilderness of 2nd division...

I've had my 535d for the last two weeks and on a mixture of around town (mainly) with a couple of decent trips I seem to be getting around 33-35mpg. Had it over 40 though on a single run so pleased with that. To be perfectly honest its not much different from E46 330d.
