All the threads on oil change intervals have made me paranoid enough to change the oil myself at around 9800 miles.

But does anyone know whether you need to prime the oil filter housing with oil, or should you just put the filter in there dry and let the system fill up on its own?

I don't think it makes a huge difference but if you want to, it won't hurt. I wouldn't put more than 1/3 of oil in the housing & not in the cap.....would just be a mess.

Cool, thanks. So when you start the car for first time after the oil change, does the pressure light come on for a few seconds? Any warnings in the Idrive?

No not at all, what you do hear are the lifters....they clatter for 3-5sec. then go quite as the oil reaches them, but this happens to most cars after an oil change or if they sit for extended periods.

Ok thanks. I'll give this a whirl on Saturday.
