Ya it is as i said if we think of screaming engines, buuuut a tweaked turbo petrol engine sounds sometimes so intoxicating, put an insane bov and it's complete. Wooooshhh!!
So you do like turbo over NA? I think turbos and superchargers is added components to a regular engine, but I think technology is working its way into making these "boosters" as part of the engine. So eventually, you no longer have these external "boosters," they will be part of the engine technology itself. Right now, they are extra components and therefore, may tend to break down as parts "not part of the engine."

Has BMW actually said anything about fitting the petrol bi-turbo into the E60? Or is it speculation? I'm more interested in whether or when they'll fit the NA Direct Injection 3.0 into the 530i.

They need to put direct injection into every engine as the 530 and 550 have less horsepower than their MB counterparts. :'(

BMW also needs to get motivated and bring a diesel to the U.S. MB has been doing it for years and the demand is there!

Costs of a V8, gas comsumption... etc etc. its the 535 will probably replace the 530. The market will not want that many V8s majority of the buyers will look at the number of cylindars and go OMG V8 gas guzzler and just blow it off. I6 V6 even H6 ok maybe not H6 but 6 cylindars are more appealing to 75% or more of the population.
Its all about the cost of certifying an engine in the US. The 3.5 turbo will also be used in the 3 series which will reduce per unit costs of certification. A 4 litre V8 probably would only be used in the 5 series.

535d is diesel. 535i is petrol... (Assuming this new engine hits the E60... A case of when)

A turboed engine gets more benefit from chipping by turning up the boost. I had a 300TT prior to the 545 and by chipping you went from 300 to 400 hp (with required intake and exhaust that did fairly little by themselves). Boost went from 9 psi to 14.5 psi. The manufacturer will usually keep the boost on the low side because of reliability concerns. Boost could be turned up more but the fuel injectors had a limited amount of flow so you would get a lean condition. The turbos were efficient up until about 17 psi - but getting there required the bigger injectors which costs some $$$. The drivability was affected somewhat because the boost hit you harder. They design a flatter torque curve and you make it a bit steeper. It takes more time to get to maximum boost so the cars rate of acceleration increases more. It was not unusual to loose traction as you hit full boost (along with more rpms) around 4000 rpm in second gear. Not exactly balanced - but a lot of fun.

Now - once a car has a turbo - you can change it out. This is where crazy numbers come from but the new turbos typically lag more because they are bigger and you will lose some drivability. But the sky does become the limit. That Nissan block could handle about 600 hp and people did it (probably still do) but you have to change a lot of parts at that point.
