My upcoming 540i has 306bhp/390Nm. Based on this, why wouldn't they introduce the existing 540i 4.0lt V8 in the US instead of a new E60 bi-turbo 3.5lt V6?

Costs of a V8, gas comsumption... etc etc. its the 535 will probably replace the 530. The market will not want that many V8s majority of the buyers will look at the number of cylindars and go OMG V8 gas guzzler and just blow it off. I6 V6 even H6 ok maybe not H6 but 6 cylindars are more appealing to 75% or more of the population.

I would worry about it when the 535 is officially announced

I'm not knowledgable about engines. However, wouldn't a V6 3.5lt twin turbo engine require more fuel to product the same/similar output of a V8 4.0lt engine? I would have thought the smaller engine will be working a lot harder. Kinda like a runner with shorter legs vs a runner with longer legs, in a 1500m race... lol..i'm not even sure if the analogy is relevant

Firstly, it's 'only' 3 litres, not 3.5 litres as implied by the name... This new engine introduces direct injection technology that makes a difference to the consumption and emissions. The turbo's are used to further improve emissions and provide an amazing spread of torque. To sum up the 535i would be just as quick (if not quicker in some areas), use less fuel and be cleaner!

No brainer really?

335i (535i) is 300lbft = 407Nm! (From 1,300 rpm) So, same peak power and more torque that 540i

And secondly it's not a V6, is 6 inline. The engine weight is 70Kg less than a V8, so even with same power, performance should be better...

Despite all the explanation above I've decided to grant my self the title of 'DUNCE' when it comes to engines. Direct injection?? I thought all the cars nowdays are direct injection??

70kgs lighter you say? Well I can lose 70kgs and then we'll be even!! HAH!!....hmm..maybe not..

I myself am a self-proclaimed "dumb guy" but I believe direct injection was first used by Audi on their 2000-2004 LeMans-winning R8 cars and has trickled down to production cars. It is just more efficient and results in 20-30 extra horsepower with no fuel economy ramifications.

Also, the 530 has a nimbler feel to it than the V8 540/550 due to it being lighter so the 535 should retain this feel, but with the added hp, so you get the best of the 530 and 540 in one car!

Plus, if you chip the 535, you get closer to 400hp vs. the 550's 325hp (correction: 360hp). Originally, I was considering a 550i as my next car but IMHO, the 535 seems to have more going for it.

In fact, one could make the argument that a chipped 535i Sport would be a better daily driver than an M5 given its equal but flatter torque curve (M5 has 383 tq), better mpg (M5 gets 12mpg), plus you have more transmission choices (I hear SMG sucks for in town driving) - all for $30K less.

So, why not just chip the 540/550 in the same manner that the 535 or 530 could be chipped? Maybe I shouldn't ask this as I doubt I'll understand the answer lol

This reminds me somewhat to my decision to buy a new computer a few years ago...should I get the NVidia 5900 Ultra GFX card or wait another year to get the latest whiz bang stuff.... you just can't win  Planned obsolecense (sp?)...

BTW, doesn't the 550i have 367bhp?
