My Ride: 06 530xi Silver Grey / Black Leather

530xi performed perfectly on a snowboarding trip to the Eastern Sierra's earlier this month. We got 18" of fresh snow in less than 24 hours, so it was a decent test of the X AWD. The car was very comfortable on the late night drive up to the mountain in blowing snow and below freezing temps. Charging up and down curving snow covered hills was not only controlled, but fun. The car was always in control without driving overly careful. An added bonus was on the way home it got 31 mpg, which is nearly twice as good as previous SUV 4WD. IMO BMW has done a great job with this car.

I agree - I got the xi for the terrible NE Ohio winters
The problem is that since I got my car only 1 real snow
I think by me finally getting a real car I changed the weather in Ohio

Yep I think an AWD sedan would be the best choice. I would buy one over any SUV as it still offers the great handling of a sedan with all-season capability. Now...if only they start making the 550xi....

Hey Boarder - What tires did you have on the car when you did this? Were they the stock RFT's or did you have winter tires mounted? If so, what brand? Thanks for the informative post. I'm looking forward to challenging some Audi's in my neighborhood when it snows. The best part is, my car is debadged so they are going to wonder how they hell I have such great traction with a RWD bimmer. Little do they know... ![Devil](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/devil.gif)

It has the stock Goodyear tires non-RFT on 17's. I am no expert, but these tires have been really good for me in a variety of conditions and have plenty of life left at 18,000 miles.
Have fun with those Audi's. In stealth you are going open some eyes. Now that you have planted the idea in my head, I will have to pass the next Quattro I see during winter driving conditions. In a safe manner, of course.
That is if I can, Quattro?s hold their own pretty well.

Black ice is like kryptonite. Going forward with four wheels is as squirrelly as stopping with four wheels. In my experience, still better than one or two wheel drives.
