Does anyone know for sure what size wrench the oil filter cannister requires on a 2006 530i? I have read both 76mm and 86mm. I know that many people use a rubber strap wrench, but I prefer using the proper fitting wrench. Thanks.

Just jam a screwdriver through the old one, and TURN! It works, but a bit messy.

+1. that's why i was asking. and when you put it on, use some of the old oil around the filter's rubber ring, and hand tighten it.

I don't think that would work in this case....it's a 'naked' filter in a hard plastic housing.

In that case, nix the screwdriver method! Do what Phil said or buy the OEM wrench from Garry of Newport, or from online on one of those links above. It's part #83300493936.

I bought the special wrench for my E46 at Pep Boys for like $5.99 and Auto Zone sells a 76mm filter wrench for $3.99. It fits on a 1/4 inch drive ratchet. Hate to pay $30 if I can get one for $3.99 locally.
