Once the 2.0 litre diesels get rolling they are pretty quick - from a standing start you would have no probs, but between 90 or a 100 I can see him sneaking past.

He probably had a manual and dropped so that the turbo was on full boost.

If he'd been to DMS he might also have had 208 bhp - which is not to shabby in a little one series.

120d (254bhp race version though) came 5th overall at the nurburgring 24 hours.
The 120d would not have done that to my 530d (231) - had a re-map last week to 271hp - 590Nm
I feel very fast 70 - 130 or more. Gotta slow down - doing 120 all the time

d models could have remapped engine software. for example. the 535d could have remapped software and it could be pushing out a lot more power enough to destroy a m3 or 550i
I suspect that's wishful thinking, my friend.

It wouldn't surprise me if the 120d you mentioned turned out to be totally standard. I borrowed an auto version the other day and was gobsmacked by the midrange pull and overall performance. Not driven a 2004 530i (231hp) so can't comment, did however once have 528i manual and have driven X3 3.0i, found both needed reving hard to get the best performance. In most race situations where the performance of each vehicle is just one second difference (530i 0-100km/h in 6.9 - 120d 0-100km/h is 7.9) the actual winning distance is marginal.

i think all agree a 120d is no match for a 530..
seems to me that he was faster than you to begin with... in my experience if in a race or competitive driving some one steps on the gas first and down shift first, 75% of the time he will leap in front, probaly overtake you and win..
unless there is a HUGE difference in engine power.
but in your story you say he was already closing in on you and you moved to the (right i think) fast lane then floored it, buy that time im sure he would have be atleast 20+kms faster.
but im sure you started to catach up on him a little later on...
if not something is wrong here.... perhaps its tuned...

Surley equals a stock 550i overall performance chapters. The highest number i've seen is from wetterauer and that's 350bhp for the 535d remaped slightly less than the 550i but alot more torque so at least will equal it. Just my hunch from all the experiences i've had one of them invlolving a stock 645i.

It's surely not a 130i as it only has a single exhaustpointing downward.
If your car is badged i have a hunch that the diesel may have been tuned otherwise he wouldn't have engaged in like that

well, the poster said "destroy" and from the numbers I've seen that's simply never going to happen. Znod et al are running 545 times that defy the official specs by a *massive* margin and the 550 will undoubtedly be quicker still. Even so, comparing stock vs tuned is always a dark art at the best of times. Major props to the 535 though, stock or tuned it is phenomenal machine.

So I was driving back home from work last night, I cut into the fast lane to overtake slower traffics in the middle lane. There was a 1 series behind me also cut into the fast lane. I was doing about 90mph, he then getting really close to my ass. When the middle lane is cleared, I've moved back into the middle lane and floored it. As a auto, it flick to 5000rpm, and I thought I would have left the 1 series off my ass.

But no, he stayed in the fast lane and over took me. I was still on the floor. It thought WTF???
As he drove pass, I realise it was only a 120d.
It's all those options weighing your car down! Is yours a 231ps or 258ps model?

There have been SO many posts about diesel performance and the whoel topic seems a bit controversial.

Anyway - I was looking at the 3 series brochure today (I have ordered a 330i msport) and the whole diesel thing struck me again. The key figures are these:

50-75mpg in 4th / 5th / 6th gear:

530i - 6.6 / ? / ?

530d - 5.1 / ? / ?

330d - 5.0 / 6.4 / 8.3

330i - 6.6 / 8.2 / 10.6

320d - 6.7 / 8.5 / 11.3

120d - 6.6 / ? / ?

The reason this struck me is that on their website BMW only publish the times for 4th (thats why I have ? for the 1's and 5's), but in the 3 series brochure they publish all the data.

So 50-75mph in 4th is the same for the 530i, 330i AND the 120d

My 530d will do almost 100 in 3rd. Bearing in mind this figures I can easily see a 120d in say 3rd pulling away from a 530i in 4th at 90 mph.

Almost makes me think I should be getting a 330d (almost )
