I have an '04 model E60 530Da, and after it got chipped - it started to make funny whistling noise, it's not loud or anything but very high pitch one so you can hear it clearly to inside the car if radio is not on. The noise comes immediately when you put load to the engine, even in very low rpm's, soon as the turbo starts to create some boost.

I have not heard this similar noise in other 530d's, so I'm wondering if this could be a problem with exhaust manifold (crack?)...?

What do you think, I uploaded a small clip of video here:

thats the sound of your turbo, mine does the same thing. ever heard a truck turbo when it`s winding up the boost? it`s the same thing, nothing to worry about.
take it to be checked just in case if you need peace of mind, i like the sound on mine as i have a K & N filter and i can hear the turbo sucking the air through it.

I see, in that case it's normal I think. I have had many turbo cars but this is just so funny as it starts immediately when you start to accelerate and with so high pitch, it sounded like something could be leaking. It didn't make that noise before chipping but I guess they increased the boost so much that now it does.

Blood, do you have any video's of the induction noise of the K&N. I'm really not worried about losing a few ponies from fitting it, but would love to know if the noise warrants any power loss. I'm very tempted.

Hmm, is there REALLY a difference in intake sound, between OEM and K&N filter? And we are talking about the original-style K&N, not some CAI kit, right?

usually those replacement panels just do give a bit better MPG, but I have never noticed any difference in sound. But I haven't tried one in this diesel engine, though.

my K & N is a direct replacement but it allows much more air though than the normal one
