When idling, all is fine
I've noticed when I squeeze the gas pedal gentle, picking up the revs to 1200rpm, the revs then start to fluctuate rhythmically between 1100rpm and 1200rpm, about once every couple of seconds. If I squeeze the pedal a bit more (say up to 1400rpm), the problem disappears.
At all other engine speeds, the RPMs are rock steady.
Anyone experienced that?
Please don't tell me I need a new engine

If anything you'll need a new gearbox...

This problem has been reduced by newer software. The 'hunting' problem is connected with the autobox and the torque convertor I believe. It usually happens when going up a small incline?

I get this on my 530i also. Stick it in Neutral, hold the throttle down VERY lightly and try to keep it at ~1000 rpm - it will fluctuate up and down. I believe it has something to do with the electronic throttle/drive-by-wire system. Happened on my previous E46 also.

Why are you revving up to that speed?

Why are you revving up to that speed?
Just wondering if it was the early symptoms of a more general erratic idling problem

No it happens when parked and the 'box is in Park/Neutral. On the move everything seems as normal.

No reason really - I was sat in traffic one day and I was squeezing the throttle for no reason whatsoever
