Hi All

Does anyone tow a caravan with their 530D Auto and do you have or have you had any problems?

I've heard horror stories about the gearbox not being the correct set up and not being up to the job?

Would appreciate genuine experience comments :-)

I've got the 535D and no gear box trouble; however I've recently had a lot of problems with the engine sooting up, requiring substantial work on the large turbo (the bit that differentiates a 535 from a 530, so maybe lucky for you..?) as well as a cleaning of the DPF filter - see here: https://5series.net/forums/topic/108...2#entry1295352

I'd be very keen to hear from anyone else towing a caravan; have you had problems with the engine getting dirty and requiring extensive cleaning of its internals, following a good long holiday with your caravan in tow? One car's problem does not indicate a systemic defect but I wonder whether these advanced turbo diesels are really fit for towing a caravan?

If your going to do a lot of towing I believe BMW offer an extra gearbox oil cooler that should be used to keep it cool.

I tow a caravan with my E61 530D.After doing a bit of research i bit the bullet and fitted an additional oil cooler for the gearbox as well as a fluid flush/replace.We went to France last year and it was great,i did find i was using the manual changes alot rather than letting the auto box do its own thing as i felt it held onto a lower gear for longer that i would have done but other than that it was really good.
Ask if you need any other info.
