Hi,

I went with a friend of mine who deals MBs for a ride in my new car. Before buying it he borrowed me some E class MBs but i prefer BMWs. As part of the trade he knows the market. Before i buy the car we talked about going for a bare 530d or a full options 525d.
He asked me what did i get but i just smiled and handed him the keys. When we got to the car he commented that i had gone for the 525 because of the extras.
After a while he just said: "you bastard! You blew your budget and went for all"
He was wrong. I got the 525d, but i am testing a tuningbox.

After seing some cool mini-clips here at the forum i made some of my own.
It went from 9.2s on the 0-100km/h mark down to less than 8s (about 7.8s (?)). At high speeds (around 200km/h) is where it is most visible
When i got the box, skeptical by nature, i imagined i would return it right away. But i am planing to keep it...

So my question is: what is the catch? I couldn't find any bad info on the net, unlike the ones i found reporting some turbo problems with ECU remaps.

Thank you!

(sorry for the lack of quality but had lights dimmed and had to convert from MOV to AVI and quality is gone...)

QUITE GOOD FOR A 525D !!

nimble, economical , and quite fast!

btw , a quick question for you ... can you tell me , you used hard start right?

as in you held the brake and floored the gas, then released brake , right ?

Not quite a hard start: i just reved until 1500 because 525d doesn't have a small turbo to help like the 535d...
(you can listen two pedal sounds in the video: break release and then floor the gas)

I am quite surprised too.. With this little box it has all i want. Seems too good to be true...

Btw, it has the extra 100kg of the touring

The BMW 0-100km/h figure for the 530d Steptronic is 7,4s...

well mate, the way i know it , you have to rev it up to where your torque curve is stongest...
anyways with your torque curve i would recommend 1900/2000rpm for best start, and i am
sure you can get that time LOWER !

thats a 525d (with + without chip-tuning) torque and power curve

700700: Stop giving good ideas or my car will be gone soon ... I did a "hard" today and went down to 7,5 (maybe a little less).
Here it is, but... STOP!
Don't tell me that i got a lot of skidding and if i turn off the DSC & co and go to a 100% grip road it would go lower. If i don't stop the car will really be gone too soon...

It is funny, though! Thanks for the good (bad) tips!

great STUFF !!! now try to warm up the tires a bit (for better grip), by driving for about 30 km... or if its very cold then do 3-4 runs from 0 to 100 to 0 again using your brakes to warm up the tires. The thing is dont brake too hard or youl wear out your tyres...

Once the tyres are warm do the same without the dsc and maybe just maybe you can get it down to 7seconds ...

ohhh sorry i wasnt meant to tell you that

I was in the pretty much the same situation as you when i decided between 525d and 530d.

My choice was either a standard 530d SE, or a 525d Sport with options.

At the time it was a late 04 model, and the sport had only just been made available, and looking at it, my decision was made pretty much instantly. The sport looks many times better than the SE, and the 525d is admittedly not as fast as the 530d, but it's also not slow! Also the Co2 tax is higher on the 530d, so that pretty much decided for me too.

I have a 6spd manual, and 0-60 is just under 8 sec's at about 7.8, and still plenty of torque for overtaking. Granted, it won't win many drag races against big engined execs, and 200bhp hot hatches, but then I'm quite content that I have a good mix of performance and economy, and lot's of optional extras, like pro sat nav, leather, adaptive xenons, auto dimming mirrors, CD autochanger, M sport styling and suspension, etc...

There are times when I lust for the 530d, and dream about 535d, but the 525d is still an excellent engine, and that 6 cyl noise is pretty intoxicating, even for a diesel! Don't know about upgrading the ECU, mines a company car, so can't modify it...

Oh it's also my first BMW, first Diesel and first 6 Cyl.

Hi,

My point is that having 525d (that has more performance than we will ever need) and with the simple plug of a less than 500eur box you can have the performance similar to a 530d (have you tried it? the diff is very clear from the stock 525d).

I am just trying to figure out if there is any problem with it. Maybe with the particle filter?

And with such performance improvements with no down side (which i am trying hard to find), i see no reason to go for a remap that might bring problems...

Fortunately, I didn't have this dilemma! The 530d SE was the only diesel available when I purchased... Although, the updated 530d looks fantastic - I presume they will do the same changes to the 525d soon? (And 535d I hope!)

Down sides are I suppose.

1. Warranty becomes invalid?

2. Insurance Invalid unless you informthem you hae modified it?
