I think its not so much the actual MPG difference, but the miles between fill ups. With a relatively small gas tank and poor MPG you will be stopping a lot more to fill up. If we have a gas shortage, you'll be in gas lines a lot more. If it were simply a matter of a few hundred dollars more per year for gas...the 550 would be a no brainer.
It's interesting......when I was looking at the 5 series a couple of years ago, I wouldn't even consider the V8 because I didn't want the poorer gas mileage. But, now that I've been driving my 530 for a couple of years, and been reading posts here by the V8 guys, there really isn't that much spread in the MPG. My 530 gets about 13-15 mpg around town....not very good......but does pretty well on the open road, usually about 29 mpg on the highway. Granted......I have an overweight foot!! It's not so much that I speed........it's that I like to get to speed quickly!! Anyway, I don't know if the newer 530 engines are doing better than mine for gas mileage, but you are right about considering all factors with respect to gassing up!! And, heaven forbid we have a gas shortage.....then we can't drive our cars as much!!

Yes, the 550 has 360 hp and the 530 (with the new engine) 260 and it is only a second slower. So the internal fight I have is between the rational and the emotional having to spend almost $200 more dollars a month making a 3 year lease more or less $7,000 more expensive. (almost the MSRP difference between both cars)
The 550i would be well worth the difference to me. Below are some data for my Steptronic 545i where one of my (slower ) times to 60 (5.38) is about the same as what BMW claims for the SMG/Manual 550i.

Secs.......Ft. Traveled......Speed
4.38...........203.92............52.5
5.38...........286.77..............60

So, let's say there is another car that is identical to mine, that I start of a zero to 60 run, and that the second car does the same one second later. Then, when I hit 60, the other car will have hit 52.5 and its front will be about 83' feet (i.e., about 286.77 - 203.92) behind my front--which is a bit over 5 5er-car lengths. It seems to me that a 530 would end up in pretty much the same position if my car and it started a run to 60 at the same time.

I think my logic makes sense. Somone tell me if I am only having a brain spasm.

I say you only live one. Get that big V8. I no longer have a 5 series, but I had an E39 540 that was simply fantstic. Great car. I would have gotten the 550 without question, but the wife told me I could have a 911. Hard to pass that up since I wanted a 911 since I was a child. I will probably be getting another 5 series when we have children, and it will be a V8.

Sorry for the mistype in the last post.
here is the right one.
Hello Forum;
I'm pretty new here at the E60. Actually I have joined the forum since I'm looking to switch my current Z4 for a 5.
I have spent the last 5 years driving my old 96', 4 cilinders Z3 and then I have my current one Z4 2.5 (both manual.
There is no question that I'm a BMW guy with good driver profile. I had an 85' 323, also 99'; 323i then a 96' Z3, (my wife a 325i C) and latelly the Z4.
Suddenly we realize at home that we really need more room for friends, moving stuff, clients, etc, and we really need a bigger car.
This is the deal. My wife will keep the Z4 and I'll be getting a 5, (thats why I'm here asking you guys for help.)

My heart is asking for the 550 (I test drove it last week. result: Awesome!) but my brain is telling me take the 530. (both sport package)
Here at the US we have great deals on the leasing option so basically I'll be not buying the car, so the difference is based in the monthly/years payments.

I know I going to miss the beautifull 550 wheels but the rest of the car is almost identical....So..., dear owners: It is really worth it? it is that second so great? Is the V8 such a big different feeling?
Objective comments for both type of owners, will be appreciated.
Thanks a lot and have an Ultimate Driving Day!!!

550

Get the 550!! I did......I have an 04 530, and have regretted not getting the V8. Granted, the newer 530s have a different engine, and more HP than mine........you will make ME feel better if you get the 550
I am in the same boat and intend to terminate the lease early to upgrade.

I'll be the oddball!
Last 5er was a '00 540i6.
Yes, the V8 power is awesome.

Test drove 530i6 (sport/prem) and 550i6 several times.

EDing 2007 530i6
sport, prem, nav, hud, cold weather, sunshades, split seats

The gas mileage sold me...

well, well, well,
first of all thank you guys for all the advice , examples and comparations. I would like to say that you actually help me but I'm now more confused.

Why, because at the same time, most of you were heading me to take the 550 (I will say that 80%) in the meantime I was doing some more (brain) exercise with the numbers.

result? well today I'll love more than ever to get the 550 but the rational side of the brain insist that the torque and that 0.9 second may be, just may be.... could wait....

In the other hand today driving home I saw a 530 with the M aero kit, and let me tell you that the car looks so good! I dont know, may be is a signal...

anyway, thanks again for all your comments and I'll continue doing some more research (and fighting with my wife) to figure out what to do.

I'll keep you all updated and have and Ultimate driving day!
