I was just looking at the specs on the 525 compared to the 530 (2006) Is the only difference the variable intake manifold? If so, is this what is responsible for the additional 40hp? Also could that intake manifold be retrofitted on the 525 motor?
....by the way...I hit a deer with my new 2006 525i Christmas Day.....$1800 of damage to the drivers quarter panel. Bummer!

I have no idea for sure - last engine I completely understood was in my 1973 Cutlass Supreme (350 Rocket - best motor ever built) -
But as far as I know the difference is all on the way in - Different intake - and I would bet also different programming.

The whole hp thing still does not make sense because the new 525 is only 10 less hp than the 05 530 - but the perfromance numbers were not that close

As far as a retrofit - not sure

We need someone to look at realoem

Interesting question. They are both the new magnesium design, they both are 3.0 litres.

That's why I pick 525i. I am not convinced that 3-stage intake manifold and software tweak can make real 40HP. BMW may overrate 530 or underrate 525. Either way, 525 is a better value.

Why do you think the 525i is a better value?

Because you may not really get extra 40HP by paying almost $4000 extra for 530.
If it were 2005, I would be willing to pay extra for a 3.0L engine (530) over 2.5L engine (525).

I'm sorry I don't know much about the intake system.
But $1800 of damage to your car is cheap compared to your life. I've heard hitting deers and other large animals is really dangerous. Good thing your are alright.

I'm glad you're OK! According to the Swedish BMW the 2006 525 has a 2.5 L engine and the 2006 530 a 3.0 L engine. Am I wrong? You get 50 Nm more and 40 hp more. I would definitely go for the 530 if you can afford it. Otherwise go for the 525 and add a lot of equipment!

i hit a deer with my old 7 series 3 years ago on my birthday. it was 3am, there was no one on the road, i was going about 80 mph on the highway coming back from atlantic city when this deer just jumps out of no where (i swear this thing was trying to commit suicide, cause it just ran straight into my car) i swerve to avoid it and it still clipped the front of my car. destroyed the front fender, headlights, grille....luckily no engine damage. and i had to limp 70 miles back home. cost $3K to fix. im not complaining though cause if i didnt swrve that thing woulda went straight thru my windshield.
