what was the reasoning behind using the 3ltr diesel 6 for the 525/530/535
the old days were better when you knew what cc the BMW was by its designation
316 was 1.6
318 was 1800
and so on.
the new diesels are mostly 3ltr but with 3 different badges?
what was the reasoning behind this?

Cheaper mass production costs, if the blocks are all the same then more they produce the cheaper it is per unit IMHO.

MAny of the engines in the current line up since the E36/E39 onwards have been playing this capacity vs badge game............520is with 2.2 litres engines, 323's with 2.5 litre engines, I see no sense to it either fwiw, and also annoys the hell out of me as well

( you made a good probable explanation Bob )

Off the top of my head, possibly a different set of cams as well as a more finely tuned ecu? Not sure if the intake manifold will also be different, you'd be surprised how the most minor of things can make a big difference. You could check this in real oem if you have a spare hour?

Lucky man to have both a 530D and a 535D.

2006 - 2007 are 3.0 litre. I believe it is the same engine but the 530 has a different intake and exhaust system for an extra 40hp. I would like to know what I can do to my 525xi to bump the power a bit. Buying a new car is not an option since I have only had mine for 9 days
