The 523 & 525 petrol engines are both 2.5 L but the 523 is 177BHP whilst 525 is 218 BHP. BMW 0-62 mph figures quote it as 1 sec faster (7.8 to 8.8 on Tourer). The price difference is ?1615.

Surely the difference is negligble for the extra price?

Comments please.

Is there a differance between the 525i and 530i or between the 540i and the 550i?

But both 520d and the 523i are nice cars, one gets around first class also in these.

Personally, I should have bought the 530i.

I would guess in day-to-day driving the actual difference is marginal. With press-on driving it's probably more noticeable. When I bought mine only the 530d was available so I had no hard decision... (535d wasn't available)

From the figures I last saw they depreciate at the same rate. Put it another way, after 4 years there will be about ?1k difference between them - cost to you ?600. (Yikes, I may be changing your mind!) The 530i is the 'loser' as after 4 years it will be only worth about ?800 more than a 525i but cost you ?3.6k more! (Or ?5.2k more than 523i, retain only ?1.7k more) *

Academically this is correct, colejl.

A 530d, which is known to be the best buy E60, keeps its price the best.

Also the low end of an E60 will keep it price, if you can get it sold.
If there are two cars with the same options, the one with the larger engine
will sell at a better price, this could make all the differance.

But the extras make this equation almost impossible the handle.
Also the colour of the car can make a big differance.

Also there's a big differance if you sell your car 2, 5 or 10 years old.
The fresher the car is, the more value the larger engine / better equipped unit has.

Indeed. A difficult choice but I guess you should buy what makes you happy (and within your budget)

The 523 is just a detuned 525 with less BHP and not as good economy. The 525 would be the petrol engine in the UK to hold its value best (Diesel is a different matter!). If it were me I would go with the 525 everytime.

I guess some 523i owners are asking the same question, only with a different intent - since its only detuned, what would it take to get a 523 to perform back like a 525 ?

I believe it's slightly more than ECU programming. I think at least the intake manifold is slightly different and therefore the modification from 523 to 525 is probably not cost effective... (Realoem list different part numbers for the manifolds)

The official figures say otherwise. However, the 525i engine produces more torque lower down (250Nm @ 2750rpm vs 230Nm @ 3500rpm) so I guess it could return roughly the same or more mpg (Depending on driving style Official figures are never 'real-world'!) The question begs why the ?1,600 difference, but like I've said before you should retain ?1k of that so the real cost is ?600 for the 'upgrade'.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to amend my order to the 525i. It seems like the logical choice.
