Have you guys all got standard seats? I've had a 530d on test for 2 days and could not get comfortable as it felt like the lumbar support was full on and there was no way of adjusting it. I had to drive with the seat either vertical for my head to hit the headrest or really reclined to support my lower back. Is there an adjustment I missed? The SA couldn't offer any advice saying that he'd never heard any complaints of this nature. Are the sports seats better?

I've also got a 520D auto which I have had since march and done around 7 000 miles so far, looking at my avrage I am getting way lower than you guys at only 32.1mpg.
That is because you have an auto, it drinks at least 25% more than the same car with a manual box.
I only got 32mpg from a 320d auto over 42000 miles, consumption 1 would show 29mpg if driven really hard for a tankful and would show 35mpg if driven really, really slowly, so I just say sod it and drive it without thinking about it.
And hate to say it but a remapped 535d is no where near an M5.

My Ride: F11 520d white, auto, professional sat-nav with internet, variable damper control, sports steering wheel, extended lighting, retractable tow bar, wing mirrors with dimming & folding, full electric seats with memory & lumber adjustment, etc.
I have the 530d Auto and my average is 33.4 mpg so I would be disappointed with less in a 520d Auto. On a run on the motorway I can get up to 42/44 mpg which impresses the hell out of me.

Also, I am currently doing 14 miles per day at 25mph
Had 69mpg out of an A4 1.9TDI (130) but trip was at 65mph behind a lorry

Almost identical consumption for the 525D Auto (suffers in town with economy)

My Ride: e39 525i Touring, will order e61 as soon as I can decide on engine and options...
Ahem, 25%? Maybe 10. But in my case the auto inspires a more "delicate" and relaxed driving style that I really didn't practice in my old 525i manual. Hence the staggering difference in fuel consumption.
End of August I will go on a trans-continental trip with the family and will be happy to report the high-speed abilities of the 520d in comparison to the 525i.

Less so on the petrol models but definitley the case on the diesels.
I had a 320d manual for nearly 2 weeks, new engine compared to my run in auto and I was getting between 43 and 48mpg driving just the same as in my auto, in which I got between 29 and 35mpg. And this gets reported time and time again by users who switch, normally the posts start.....I just swapped to an auto and my mpg is really poor, why?
Also I love the way everyone compares MPG figures, nobody is the same, the only way you can tell if your car is not giving you the correct mpg is to borrow another one the same for a few days and see what you get from that.
A BMW diesel takes approx. 10 km to fully warm up, until it has it can be using up to 40% more fuel than it is when heated up, you can also use 50% more fuel with any sort of stop/start driving, so if you leave your house, go down the motorway for 4 miles then through town for 2 miles the car won't have warmed up properly and when it has you are in town driving, this is as bad as it gets for fuel economy.
Someone else who gets onto a nice back road and does a steady 80kmh for 20 minutes could have an MPG reading nearly 60% higher.
Also somone I know well who also had a 320d auto when I had mine, in fact he still has his, always says that he was surprised at my 32mpg when he got 39mpg. I said it was probably because I drive it harder than him, to which he always said 'nonsense' he drives just as fast. Then one day he took me to collect a new car and a journey that takes me no longer than 2 hours took us nearly 3h30mins, it was then I realised why he got 7mpg more than me!
We all drive differently so we are all going to have different fuel consumptions, and don't buy a BMW auto if you want economy!
