Found that my consumption (and engine flexibility) improved greatly once i'd covered 9000 miles. (520d)
I knew that the engine when new was tight but perhaps the warmer weather of late has helped as well. Now getting ave of 44-47mpg in 70% cruising 30% urban driving

Singh,
Make sure that the I Drive settings for units are set to UK mpg and not US mpg. This won't change how many miles from a tank, but will change the display.
I get around 450 - 500 miles from a tank, which is between 33 and 35 mpg with mixed driving. On a motorway run BELOW 70 mph i can get over 40 - 45 mpg. I think i have only done this once. With 'normal' driving i get high 30's on a run.

Well, I've just driven to Paris and back
990 miles
48.7mpg average for whole trip
62.1mph average speed
Most cruising done on autoroute at around 130kph (80mph), average speed brought down by mix of town driving
My cars done approaching 6000 miles now so starting to loosen up a bit. Things can only get better
