IN The UK it was October 2007 from what i recall, i know because my Brother in law bought the 520d (also a member here)
and he has this, he got delivery in dec 2007, and he gets a stonking 59 Mpg in TOWN, Thats right in TOWN, highway/Motorway would be more for sure.
Er, there's no way he gets 59mpg!

Offical (lab) figures are (Manual):

43.5/65.7/55.4mpg Urban/Extra Urban/Combined.

These are usually at least 10% optimistic so it's going to be nearer 40mpg.

One more remark: The 520d engine becomes smoother over time. When my dealer told me that, I thought it was just him selling the car. Now, after 1 year and 40KKm, I can really confirm that the engine is quieter and smoother than when it was new. OK, it will never come even close to a BMW 6 cyl petrol engine, but you won't hear it's a diesel once you're cruising (and it's run in).

Today I drove 100km/h on cruise control for a long time, and measured consumption for 10km. According to i-drive (~5% off) I got 4.3l/100km = 55mpg (US) = 65.7mpg (imperial)

I know this is not saying much about real life average consumption, including city and autobahn, but I think it's still impressive and way better than many small cars.

Average consumption of my car on long trips is still better than 6l/100km except in Germany.

Have a 520D and true, except Germany, mediated on 1k km gave me 5.6l /100 km with sprints and not being able to mantain the speed limit. Quite impressed on the fuel consumption of the 520D accounting for aerodynamics and weight. Accelerating to 170 km/h is fine, the part from 200 to top is somewhat harder. What type of Diesel do you use in general? I always bought the V-Power for Diesel and the 98 for gas. Does anyone know in long term, except wallet, the engine behaviour on V-Power versus regular diesel fuel?
Regards

I never tried to find a correlation between consumption and fuel type, but a collegue of mine did it in detail. He keeps track of every km he drives, the range and the fuel type. Fuel consumption is then calculated over the car's life time (couple of years in his case).

His conclusion: Seasonal influences etc are very clearly noticable, but there was absolutely no difference between the lowest cost regular diesel and the expensive V-power types.

HI Chaps,

First post for first time buyer of an E60.
I ordered my 520d mid June and have been told yesterday it will be here on the 8th if July.
My spec is a 520d M Sport, Titanium SIlver, Black Dakota Leather, Media Package, Sun Protection Glass, Rear Spoiler, Front Heated Seats, USB Interface, Automatic Gearbox and Space Saver Spare Wheel with standard 18inch alloys.
I'm soooo excited!

In the meantime I have a loan 520d SE automatic and the fuel economy is great considering I have a lead foot! ~41mpg around town and ~48mpg on long journeys.
The ride is smooth with very few flat spots and sometimes a bit slow to react when I need to overtake but the SE has done less than 2,000 miles so I assume it will get better over time.

I have noticed in the wet conditions (UK) that the handling is not that great as in my village there are two sharp right turns to get to my house and a couple of times the rear end has drifted slightly. Considering I have been doing less than 30mph when this occurred it's rather alarming. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have a April 2008 520d (177) UK MSport Touring Auto and my car engine doesn't stop when I'm idling at a traffic lights etc. Should it be? Is this something that can be fixed?

Thanks in advance.
