Tomorrow I should* collect a new 520d. [Yes, you may laugh now; it may be that me and my gerbil-powered E60 don't belong on this site.
When you're laughed-out, consider that my home country of Finland levies emission-based taxes ranging from some 50 to 200%. Figuring EUR-USD x-change rates, the dinero for my 520d would get you an in M5 the USA , and a Finnish-registered M5 would almost get you a new Rolls Phantom in America. Well, at least that's my excuse for pretending to belong to this site. Seriously, I have to say I have been particularly impressed by the courteousness and helpfulness of nearly all posts in this forum, and I look forward to joining the conversation.]
Do any others know what kind of gas mileage (consumption) one can really expect? BMW claims 6.5/4.3 l/100km city/hwy (36/55 mpg US, 43/66 mpg Imp.), but my test drive achieved combined of about 7.0 l/100km. Anyone out there have better knowledge?
Cheers, Stimpy
*I say "should," as the delivery date on that contract I signed back in _February_ was Aug. 1, but the dealer informed me it won't be ready until maybe Aug. 12th.
I suspect Labor day comes and goes and I'm still riding a bicycle...

I have done now 6000km with my 520da with average consumption 5,8 l/100km (computer shows 5,7 l/100 km). Compared to previous 525da from 2005 fuel economy is remarkable improved (average 3 years: 7,2 l/100km), but acceleration and power feeling are very close to each others.

Congrats on the new ride -- hope you collected it today!
My fuel stats:
After approx 90.000KM my pre-LCI 520d manual had an average consumption of 8.1L/100KM.
After approx 33.000KM my LCI 525d automatic has an average consumption of 8.6L/100KM. Very good considering it has an extra 2 cylinders and an auto compared to my previous ride!!
If I did not do so much high-speed autobahn driving, I would expect the economy to improve by about 1L/100KM.

Hi stimpy9226 and welcome to the Forum,
Congrats for your excellent car choice.
Please send in some pics and fill out your signature.
I have a '08 520dA and the consumption has been between 6,3 - 7,9 l / 100 km
but usually around 6,6 l / 100 km in urban/suburban driving.
The almost 8 liter came from short stints in the city only and car standing a lot still but running.
With a non-automatic you should do at least 0,5 l / 100 km better.
PS. All measures are made with the trip meter and gas pump actual fillings.
The iDrive shows about 6,6 l / 100 km.
PPS. The consumptions should get lower after that the car has been driven some 10 - 15 000 km's.
Mine has only 4 700 km's on it.

Congrats on the new motor.
I just checked my car (520d manual, 06, 60,000 Km, 2 yrs old) and the trip computer says 6.9l/100km. I haven't reset it in a long time and the driving is mixed urban/rural.
