BMW is notoriously not recommended for owning after warranty. Period.
Can you explain this statement???? How can this supposedly wonderful car that is so state of the art and safe etc and so expensive not be reccommended to own after being off warranty? Makes no sense to me. Shouldn't it be expected to last for years? I don't get it. You mean I'm going to spend a 100 grand Canadian on a new 550 and seeing as how I commute to work 200 plus km per day that I should be concerned once I'm over 80,000 km???? Yikes

I can help out here, after 30 years of BMW ownership: You should simply take note of the prices for parts and labor that we can casually ignore while under warranty. To say that they are staggering is understatement.

The cost of the extended warranty, around $2500, can be run up in one or two visits after the standard warranty expires. I know, I've done it on simple routine things (oil seals around top of engine=$800; new cat converter $1600; brakes and rotors $900) and the list goes on. And this was on my much less problematical 540iS.

Ever stop to think what that steering column elevating motor's replacement would be worth? I know ONE up-motor for a headrest is $250...

As they say: "Go figure!"

Cheers,

I need more opinions on this. What percentage of people buy extended warranty? Do you advise it?

I think you are right re: the expensive repair/parts for the BMW post-OEM warranty period. However, the prices you quote are based upon BMW OEM parts at retail prices.

If I was not covered by a BMW warranty program (extended or otherwise), I would not necessarily use OEM parts, and if I did then the OEM parts could easily be acquired at less than retail (and probably closer to wholesale) prices.

I dont own an E60 but I own a 2000 BMW E46 and the car has been out of warranty for 18 months now and so far I havent done any repair to my car out of warranty.

I rather save the $2500 in my own saving account and only use that money if I have to fix my car. There is no way i would give that kind of cash to a BMW dealer just to be safe.

Trev550i,

Looks like you have a 2006 550i ... so you've got time to decide. Drive the car and see how it shakes out. If it is quiet and generally trouble free, I would not worry about the extended warranty (but still recommend the extended maintenance plan, however).

On the other hand, if the car consistently acts up, after about 3 or 3.5 years, start shopping for a warranty price.

Also, finally, after 3 years or so, you might decide you (a) don't like the car anymore (b) want a new car ? or both. So then the issue of an extended warranty is moot.

Long answer short? Just wait, no hurries, you've got lots of time.

Cheers.

Thanks Bud
Point well taken. I can probably get my own wholesale warranty through some company in Canada and you're right I'll have time to check it out. We just got rid of our Ford store 2 years ago so it's exciting to go through this process on the other side of the counter! We sell RV's and trailers etc big time now and I know I deal with 2 ext warr companies for that stuff but I'm not sure if they do cars. I'll check it out and if so I'll post some super cheap warranty rates on here! Help out everyone!
