I reached 50,000 miles yesterday and I had BMW Roadside Assistance pick up my car this morning. Why? Well it all started yesterday at about 49,985 when my car started vibrating and shaking while idling at a red light. You could hear a rattling from under the hood. My brakes wouldn't work either at low speeds. It felt as if the car was possessed. It didn't happen while driving over 10 mph. Then the Service Engine Soon light appeared along with some Emission Failure light. I just purchased the Extended Warranty and Full Maintenance to 100K miles last Friday. I was thinking about not purchasing the extended warranty, but I'm glad I did! Keep you updated on the results.

I shopped around and Century West BMW had a great deal. I paid $2549 for the "BMW Original Owner Protection Program." Good until 100K miles or 4 years with a $50 deductible. I also checked Santa Monica BMW - $3999 (rip off), Long Beach BMW - $2999 (after market ,not BMW, according to the guy), and Bob Smith BMW - $2749 (original BMW). The Maintenance Program cost me $1245. Bob Smith wanted $1450. 72 months or 100K miles. I originally was not going to opt for the maintenance but I figured a brake job would cost me $1000. Also, beware of after market warranties. It seems some dealerships push after market warranties more than the original factory warranties. Higher commission? Talk to Amir Manzur in Finance at Century West. Cool guy and the best price!

wow, i thought i drove alot. I've had my car for about 15 months and already have 35k miles on it
(due to long distance work driving (not that i mind)). Anyways, I guess i should think twice now about buying an extended warranty. I hope in NJ i get a good deal...we'll see. <_<

Well, I guess it depends on the car. I have a Z3 I bought used after the warranty has expired. The car had 29K miles on it but was older than 36 months. Anyway, i wouldn't say that the car had absolutely no problems whatsoever over the last 2 years, but they were all very minor - but Z3 is a very basic car to begin with.

BMW is notoriously not recommended for owning after warranty. Period.
