I test drove the E550 before I bought my 550i. Obviously, I liked the BMW better. The MB was actually quicker than the 550i and the interior finish was good. The handling in twisties was not even close to the BMW as the car was MUCH softer in the curves and much more floaty. I liked the technology of the BMW (HUD, active steering, Active Suspension, adaptive cruise control) which MB was not offering. At the time, BMW was offering pretty good deals on the 550i (pre LCI) and MB was not offering anything. The feeling I got from MB was that the name alone sells the car. Ultimately, the much superior handling and the technology drove me to buy my first BMW and I haven't been sorry in the least. Oh, by the way, check the record of repairs of the E-class. They have not been good over the years.

hey no slagging the PUG , just because you need to have a spare parts truck behind you and work on them every weekend dosnt mean there a bad car. They do handle quite well ha.

I had this exact smae debate with myself 3 weeks ago. I was all set to buy an E500. Primarily because I liked the exterior looks better on the E than what I had seen in the 5 series (mostly 525 and 530). When I got to the dealership I decided to drive a 545 w/sport package they had just to be sure. Obviously since I am here I chose the BMW. While I still really like the E500, I chose the BMW for the following reasons:
1) It is a drivers car. Better handling, feel and response
2) I love the idrive operation and technology of the BMW.

And finally my wife (a life long MB fan) drove the car and her qoute was "Why can't they make all cars drive this good?"

E-class: Interior much more refined. Handling less responsive, but a smooth ride

5-series: Handles much better. Exterior looks better. Interior has way too much plastic seems americanized

My friend who bought a used clk V-8 last year was impressed with my 530. Hes going to have a baby soon ,and he just texted me if I can help him find a 545. I then text him back No E class? He texted me back that after driving my car , and all the attention from the Ladies he opted for performance over comfort.
