I think in your reference to plushness of the anthracite headliner, you may be confusing anthracite which is a color with alcantara which is a suede like material.
I had an alcantara liner in an '02 M5. However I do recall the '08 550 I test drove with the anthracite head liner did feel soft and fuzy compared to the hard feeling liner that is standard.

It is fuzzy, while the standard headliner is a woven material.

Thank you to all of you who responded. What a terrific amount of knowledge on this site. I enjoy reading...and you may not believe it but there is alot of knowledge that a lot of us do not have. So your sharing is rocking!

How much is the Alcantara headliner option?

It's so much nicer than the regular material.

I don't think you can order it in the USA -- I think it comes standard on an M5 though...

That's what I thought, but from the posts, it appears that U.S. members have seen 550s with alcantara.

edit: Nevermind. I guess I'm confusing anthracite with alcantara headliners.

Yes. I probably lead you astray with the fuzzy comment. Here's a recap:

Alcantara comes on the M5, and is basically a form of ultrasuede. In general, it is nice stuff. My only complaint about it was when I had it on my steering wheel in my old E46 ZHP. It couldn't handle the wear and tear. I guess it was my white-knuckle grip. Obviously, this is not a concern with the headliner.

The anthracite liner is more like a velvet fabric. While it is not quite as luxurious as the Alcantara liner, it is a step up from the stock liner, which is a woven material.

However, most seem to get the Anthracite liner because it is black, not because of the perceived quality of the fabric. The black liner seems to work better with two tone interior colors like Natural Brown, and the all-black interior can be quite striking as well.

Anthracite headliner is only available as a Priority 1 option code. That is why you don't see them sitting on dealer lots. I ordered my 2008 535 yesterday with the anthracite headliner. Cost is $500.

The anthracite headliner is a great option. The color really compliments the black interior of my car, more so than gray.

What on earth is an anthracite headliner and how does it relate to brown, gray, black, tan etc? Thanks.

Strictly marketing hype.... I like it better and am glad I added it at the end, but honestly -- $500??!! It should have just been standard, or an optional selection like the various wood trim, for all of maybe $10 extra the fabric <might> have cost them.
