Just checked out my buddy's brand new 06 3-Series and for a key, he has a cartridge that looks like a standard alarm remote which is inserted into a slot (much like a key). On top of that, it has a really trick feature: push button ignition!!! What gives...I spend almost $60K for my 06 530i and I get a standard turn-key system and he spends $37K and gets this!?!? How does that make sense?!? Okay, I'll stop whining now...

i actually think this feature is counter-intuitive as you still need to put the access card into the dash...BUT, fear not, the E60 has a new option that will be available in Sept orders called Comfort Access, this is the option from the 7er, and unlike the standard feature on the E90, this does not require you to put anything into the dash, you just need to have the 'key' on you and you can open/lock doors and push start/stop....

The Start/Stop button should be standard in all 5 Series from september

Comfort access will be a option

I believe comfort access in an option available NOW on the E90.

Having briefly owned an E90 after an E60 I can say that it is not really counter intuitive as it is the "key", not a card, that you place in the dash underneath the start/stop button. The "key" is very similar in appearance to the one used in the 7 series. It's a pretty easy system to use in all honesty and just becomes 2nd nature but it is just a marketing gimmick with no real added value over a conventional key/ignition lock system.

Having owned a few 3 series I can tell you the quality of the apointments on the 5 are of much higher quality.

Look at the Sun roof assembly, windshield wiper assembly, Tilt/tele steering wheel drive, inside door handle latches, leather, and many many more.

The 3 may have the new start PB , the 5 will also, but I hardly can say I miss it on my 2004 .

The 5 is head and sholders ahead of the 3 in quality , but the 3's sure a blast to drive.

I was also torn between the 3 & 5 but the 5 won out! The 3 is a nice car, but it cannot match the 5. The start button, which is also in the 1(my wifes car) is a nice touch but it did not make me wait to order my 5 until Sept. The comfort access is avail. now for the 1, 3, and 7.(here in Germany)

I had an E60 (oct. 2003) and the quality was not so good. (not to say 'poor')
That's why i ride the E90 now! And i must say, it's better! No rattles, engine is running more smoothly, (till now) no electronical problems. Every thing is working as supposed to be.
The quality of the older 5 series was a lot better. Maybe(!?) BMW has it under control now, but mine E60 was a lousy car.
And have you seen, how BMW is 'installing' the (coming soon) 'PB' in the E60? Not the most elegant way.....

RoBMW,

That actually looks like someone installed it themselves from an E90. Definitely not designed from the ground up. The slot in the steering column isn't so bad, but that button looks like it ruins the flow of the dash.

I will have to see it in person.

Regards,

Michael
