My Ride: 530i, titanium grey, beige Dacota leather upholstery, 17'' star spoke wheels (138), SMG gearbox, wood trim, bluetooth phone, voice control, xenon plus adaptive headlights, active steering, PDC, rear side airbags, auto-dim Internal and folding external mirrors, advanced auto aircon

On the 530i the NE 52 engine's output is 258bhp (or 255 hp).
However, on the 130i and z4 3.0SE its output is 265 bhp (don't know the hp figure).
More importantly, the torque becomes 32kgr instead of 30.
What is the reason for this variation?
Can we have our 530s upgraded?

There can be many reasons.

I suspect one of the following two. (a) 7 bhp at this engine capacity, can be gained easily, only by rearranging of the exhaust system and engine position. If so, no, you cannot upgrade. (b) publicity stunt. 130i with 265 bhp seems like a baby M. Remember that E46 M3 was only a bit more powerful. Well, not quite, but anyway, 130i is a bomb on wheels and probably they felt that increasing bhp output just a bit, will do the stunt. And I think they succeeded.

This has been covered before. The 130i has a shorter (and 'better') intake system and slightly different tune...

By the way 258PS (Pferdest?rke=Horse Strength) = 255HP (Horse Power) (1PS=0.986hp)

Thank you very much for the assistance, my friend! Do you know whether anything can be done to the 530? (I am more interested in the 2+ kgs of torque rather than the 8PS)

And you should note in the next release of the 3.0 engine in the E92 (3er coupe) they are projecting 272HP.

Watch out for the 335. BMW STEP students are getting that car in a few weeks to play with in Florida. Yup waaaay earlier than when it'll be released in the US. I'll ask my friend to do a write up once he gets to play with it.

The engine is detuned for "lower" model.

Check out the hp difference between 525i and 530i. Both use the exact same engine, but the 525 is 215hp, and the 530 is 255hp.

And as ever these 'updates' filter to other models over time...
