If you did this recently, you probably had a 20-30 mph tailwind, which explains the unusually high mileaage. Had you been heading north, into the wind, you'd have probably seen <= 20 mpg. Averaging the two directions would put you in the 24-25 mpg range, which is about what I average at interstate speeds.

Also, is this based on the trip computer? This is usually about 5% or 1mpg optimistic.

Still, not bad for a V8.
I drove up last Friday and was averaging 28mpg per the computer until i sat for 30 min at idle due to an accident which brought my avg mpg down to 27.3 by the time i got to the border. One the way back the next day I was at 28mpg. But the entire trip i was doing my best to feather the throttle but at the same maintain 80-85 mph to get my avg as high as possible. I did do a 95mph stint for about 20 miles and thought that would bring down the mpg but it hovered around 28mpg still. Now I just filled up my gas tank and 3/4 accelerated into traffic (reset the mpg computer) and averaged 6mpg during that 500ft of acceleration. Now i realize when i accelerate hard I'm getting nascar-like fuel mileage (4-5mpg) and why my in town mpg is lousy sometimes. If i pay attention i can average 20mpg in mixed city/hwy driving on a tank and if I accelerate hard occasionally it's 17mpg or less over a tank.

Seriously - if you are so bothered, why keep the 545i? Buy one of these ... http://www.toyota.com/prius/

You buy a car like yours not to "pay attention so you can achieve 20mpg", but to drive hard and enjoy!!

In terms of mpg, v8 have not improved since early 90's. My father has a 91 Lincoln Towncar that could do 24-28 mpg on highways. In terms of power, there's improvement. Overall, I think automakers are limited to physics; technological advances (still staying on the petro platform) have not yielded "surprising" improvement. I don't know if it has anything to do politically with the price of oil. Suspect it does.

Yet you were charged Gas Guzzler tax when you bought your 545 in 2004? Kinda lame if you ask me... and these trucks and SUVs with 9mpg and 20 MAX MAX MAX highway get away with no GGT.

Hey! Don't make fun of them! You have a 535d which means you are averaging 30-40mpg even if you "ride hard you can rest when you die"

Btw. Prius sucks I haven't seen any of these mutants in Europe yet

Agreed with the sucks comment, but I have seen a fair few in London. About the only place a hybrid possibly makes sense. I have seen one or two around my way, but lugging around 100s of kilos of battery and electric motor/generator is totally counterproductive when you never actually use the regenerative braking on the things. And bolting all that kit into a 2 ton Lexus is even more ridiculous, IMHO. Prius's will go out of fashion soon

Get a nice 530D. 214bhp, about the same torque as an M5, and still average 40mpg (UK gallons). Luverly

Yes I do. In the UK, it's always cold. Everybody should buy cars with the lowest, worst MPG possible. Do what you can to speed up global warming, let's get the UK hot ! Plus, once the UK is nice and hot due to global warming, we won't need to fly overseas to hot countries in the Summer, thus reducing pollution. See, it will all work out in the end. And, as an added bonus, apparently when the sea rises, France will sink.
LOL Very funny Russ, I understand having family "across the pond", not too fond of the French either!
