The change oil and filter warning light came on my '05 right around 1500 miles. Took it into the dealership today which was supposed to be a 15 minute clearing of the false warning light. After 2.5 hours rep said that my car was defaulting to a need to be serviced every 250,000 miles and they were unable to change it. They gave me an appointment for a full reprograming, to turn off the warning light at their next available appointment in mid January.

Hi Firewired. My '97 528i has 291,000 miles on it, so I guess you got a car as well built as mine. These BMW's can really go that many miles. Damn, I guess I should have had mine serviced 41,000 miles ago. Hope I don't have a problem now.

Wow. You should have left it at that and you wouldn't have needed to leave your car in for a service until 2016.

If anyone is experiencing similar behavior I spoke to the shop foreman of the dealership where I purchased the car, who has a much more experienced repair department. This is an issue that they have seen before and requires DME reprogramming of two modules.
