I'm thinking of installing a pair of 255/35/19 on a pair of 172 style front rims. Not sure but I think the rims are 8-1/2 inch wide.
The stock tires are 245/35/19.
Will the 255's be too wide?

A 255/35/19 can be fitted to a 8.5" wide rim but 9" is normally the measuring rim for specification figures. It is about 0.5" larger in diameter than the 245/35/19 and with the extra width you might get rubbing.

I'm running 255/35/19 front and 275/35/19 rears no rubbing on the front but I did have to roll the rear fenders after I put Bilstein PSS adjustables on.
You'll be fine
