Default 2009 528i, E60, car shuts off and jerks

A few weeks ago the DTC error control message came on and later resolved itself. The last few days the car has been jerking and shutting off while idling or starting off from a stop.

2009 E60, 528i with “only” 197,000 miles. I’m in NorCal on flat roads.

Of late, the car has begun shutting off randomly at stop signs or when I put it in gear. And engine shuddered once and it’s been jerking a couple of times per hour. Only when coasting at low speeds or stopped. This does not always happen.

Yesterday, it decided to throw some control messages:
- DBC malfunction
- Drive control system- Drive carefully
- start-off assistance inactive

The actual cause is anything but these things above because I drive like a non-alcoholic granny.

The internet says it may be faulty throttle body actuator. I have the best minds working on it. I.e. me and my neighbor. He is actually a well qualified Honda mechanic, retired. So stay tuned.

You may want to physically check the module for damage. Also check the battery and alternator.

I can't see it being the throttle body

In the past, those symptoms of jerking and shutting off while idling or starting off from a stop, are characteristic of:

- fuel pump malfunctions
- check negative side of the battery for lose connection
- EKP fuel controller malfunction
-

Default Battery checked out OK

The voltage on the battery is 12 V and there is connectivity between it and ground on the negative side. The connectors seemed nice and tight. Didn’t know what else to check.

The fuel pump code says it is ok. How is the fuel controller tested?

Need to be more specific. You should be around 12.5v not running and 14.2v running. If at12v battery is bad. Below 13.8 alternator needs to be checked

Your battery needs to be replaced if it's 12v not running. 12.8-9 is ideal how old is the battery

The battery is a few years old. I’d guess 7 or so.
